Rage of Bahamut: Genesis

Oct 27, 2014

Oh Hell yeah, you lookin' for some fantasy action adventure? This is a fast paced, mother fucking bad-ass, well drawn, awesome action title!  I am just going to say if there was ever a title that required, no, demanded a review to get people to check it out, Rage of Bahamut deserves it. A one word review to describe it? "fun."  Right from the start we are introduced to: huge high fantasy dragons, angelic magic powered glowing women on steeds, and a raging battle just this side of Middle Earth. Dont want that type of action? How about a clever horseback chase as they literaly rip... See full review

My Love Story!!

May 31, 2015

How do you easily grab my interest away from cookie cutter titles? Well, it is not hard. Any title that puts a lumbering, big lipped, buzz cut guy slapped right on the front title promo picture tells me that this title might be worth a look. Quantifying this anime leaves me hard pressed to find a title that is similar to it. The awkward height proportions of Lovely Complex? The main character who downright scares everyone like Kimi ni Todoke? Or possibly the character who does not know about romance very well like Say, I love you?  All of these would make solid recommendations, yet do not... See full review

Mameshiba

Nov 19, 2014

Are you on drugs? Would you like to be? Well, why not try out Maeshiba. This is one of those odd titles that remind me that Japan is a lot different than the rest of the world. When 59 second shorts about small beans or food that talk to you with random facts you know you are in for Oddity city.   There is no real narrative. Just understand that somehow a single coffee bean will sift away from other beans. Then that bean will look up to a character, introduce itself, and then tell the main character of this short a random fact. The fact like "hippos sweat is pink" will normally cause the... Samero

Oct 30, 2011

First off, claymation penis makes any claymation artsy. Mezamero is some sort of animation project that somehow got funding in Japan, and was niftily put up on You Tube for me to waste my time on. Stop photography shorts can come in 2 sizes. Unique, brilliant little gems that can stir the mind, sometimes leave you uneasy. The second are dreadful, overwrought, crap-fests that are better left in a project room floor somewhere gathering dust while being stepped on. This was the later. It was not that the story mattered. After a few lines of metaphysical mumbo jumbo, we are greeted to a mixture of... See full review

AIKa R-16: Virgin Mission

This is the worlds quickest review. I can sum the show up with one line. Underwear, lots of it. STORY Underwear,   Lots of it.  ANIMATION (colorful) Underwear Lots of it SOUND Average  (if underwear made noise, I am sure it would have been here) CHARACTERS A moving stroke of deep emotional story telling, with strong emotional women, wound tight with a sisterhood of care and love...   .... what am I kidding? Garakowa -Restore the World-

Mar 28, 2016

Tron stumbles into a bar and hooks up with Madoka Magica and Log Horizon.
But wait! Digimon Movie 2 and Eva both show up and say that he is the baby daddy and all hell breaks loose... I believe a chair is thrown. Garakowa was a title I had the fortune to see, complete with a panel afterward of the director and producer. I was at Sakuracon, and saw that we had a rare opportunity to meet the makers at the end. This was an interesting notion, and seeing that I knew nothing of it, I was going in completely blind. First off, let me say it is not remarkable. It has a lot of flash and pizzazz, but the... Ushio and Tora TV

Jul 23, 2015

Dragonball has a new series, Sailor Moon has been revived and JoJo is no-longer an OAV, I think I smacked my head on a time machine and woke up in the 90s.  Here comes another very simple straight forward shonen from that era. Set up is easy; Tiger looking demon, kid who grows long hair and carries a long sacred spear. Each episode so far has our protagonist fighting a demon. We know what is going to happen you won't need Cliff’s Notes or Wikipedia to fill you in on subtle deep meanings. No, you will be able to follow the numbers like a paint by colors booklet. But there in-lies the... See full review

Gangsta.

Jul 21, 2015

When watching this title, I said to myself, based on the opening alone it would be an exploitative ride down a dark path of violence, sex and bloody action.  Then I watched episode 1 and realized, yep, not for little boys and girls, but then I kept watching. Soon it felt like I was watching a Gonzo title. It has a fantastic start, and a so-so end. At first the title seemed like a seedy world of tough guys who bludgeon, dice and blast through a trove of gang minions. But then the show seems to take an almost comical turn when they introduce a crime family ran by a young girl. From the point... See full review

Mou Inu Chuui

Jun 10, 2019

This definately goes in the wtf did I just watch category. Odd little web-twitter thing that has a dog with an annoying voice chat at you about being a dog.  The only thing that was interesting was the 2 dogs at the vending machines with owners right out of an Airline exit manual.  Not sure the reason for creating this. nor why I blazed through the three episodes listed, But I did.  Would I recommend it? Only if you have a challenge to watch an entire series in 5 minutes flat.

Lupin III: Part V

Jun 14, 2018

This Lupin, is such a great encapsulation of the Lupin that went before it yet draws in savory chunks of new ground to make this the freshest Lupin incarnation since Jigen's Gravestone or A Woman Names Fujiko Mine.  So, you want to know where to start with Lupin? Start here. Yep, that is right, even after over 40 years of Lupin in its many jackets, Lupin can just be started here. Now, if you have some time, I'd always suggest watching one or 2 episodes from Lupin in his red jacket glory of the 70s, or Castle of Cagliostro (the title that got me into anime) But, you don’t really need to. Lupin... See full review

What can you do then?  Fear not, a visceral explosion of fire and destruction awaits as you kick it with a bowl of noodles and a pentagram. You will invoke the Fire of the Phoenix as an egg is cracked from the heavens. Your super sentai instincts will be invoked as the blast radius of your Second Impact destroys the planet.  A demon with dinner. Nissan!

Gundam Reconguista in G

Oct 11, 2014

Welcome back Tomino. It has been a while since I tried to decipher a story thrown at me with as much force as dirt through a Dyson Vacuum. Gundam: G no Reconguista reunites not only Yoshiyuki Tomino with his crowning achieving of Gundam, but also gives us his compadres who helped with the character designs of Turn A Gundam and the same character designer and mecha designer of King Overman Gainer. But wait that is not all! It also is set in the old Universal Century (now living in a new timetable) to have fun with again.  Can it be watched without seeing the original series? Yes. Will it be confusing?... See full review

La Corda D'Oro ~primo passo~

Aug 8, 2014

I think I am going to create a reverse romance! First thing, I need a hapless heroine who is attractive to the males in the title for no in particular reason other than she is of the opposite gender. We now need some guys. Let's make one A brawny sporty type who is into her, a fun guy who you can laugh at (but chances are slim the girl would end up with him) now we need the guy who acts like he doesn't like her at first, yeah just like that. Oh and a quiet cute boy. Me: "You know what we are missing?"   Audience: "An Asshole guy?" Yeah we need one of those. If we have enough... See full review

Kämpfer

Jan 28, 2010

Not being a major reviewer of sorts, I just need to come here to somehow make sense of the wasted 4-5 hours of my life. I am a big fan of gender-bender storys. When I saw this on a monthly marathon, hosted by Chii on Anime Planet, I was overjoyed and really looking forward to this title. It sounded like I, Me My, Starberry Eggs, meets My-Hime, and had potential.  I was just finishing a title that was the polar opposite called Aoi Bunkoi, so the change of pace sounded like Rocky Road bliss. 20 minutes into the first episode I realized I was more wrong than people who order a Snuggie. Dead Heat

Sep 10, 2019

When you get a shiny new mecha bike handied to you, because obviously you have some sort of hidden talent, all is good in OAV 80's anime world.  So, this is the first mecha title I have seen where the machine seems to glide on wheels. Rideback or even Code Geass might owe something to this, I am not sure. I mean, there is wearable mecha, and one with wheels on the feet, but none that kinda skate along the ground that I saw before this. Even Mospeada bikes boost with jetpacks or walk with feet. Anyhow, mecha designs look pretty good. The races allow you to not only knock into eachother, but you can... See full review

Lupin III 3DCG

Apr 5, 2018

Pretty much a single caper and car chase in a short CG rendered version of Lupin.  It lacks much of a story, but for a hair over 2 minutes packs in everything you'd need to know about Lupin. The still shot on the site does not do the animation justice. It is actually pretty good for 2012.  Oh, and Lupin uses a New version Fiat 500 for a change.

Lupin III: Pilot Film

Sep 1, 2017

This was made before all other Lupin that came before it, and it is it a product of the 60s. Sureal introductions of everyone, oddly placed live action with some nudity, and Fujiko looking like a bucktoothed goddess.  It is hard to discribe this. It was obviously planned to be a longer series but then the Live action movie was made, followed by the first TV series in the 70s. However, all the halmarks are there. Lupin, leaving calling cards and thieving, Jigen a right hand man. Fujiko uses her body as a weapon and Zenigata is still goofily chasing Lupin. Goemon is the only one who seems a bit out of... Lupin III: Goemon's Blood Spray

Aug 30, 2017

Do you want your Noir Samurai flick with a heaping helping of limbs, heads and blood being hacked and lobbed in the air like a bloody tossed salad? Do you want the cool aesthetic of finely hand drawn vibrant animation that practically locks your eyes to the screen enjoying every movement? Queue this up immediately, and pop a bottle of 10 dollar Malbec for a fun filled evening of old-school anime violence. First off, this is NOT like the Lupin in Castle of Cagliostro, the 2nd-4th TV series, or the one in the Lupin vs Detective Conan movies. This one is bloody, very bloody. This is following in the 2... Apr 12, 2016

Amending a review for a show you originally thought was a mediocre mess only to be surprised by a solid second act, is very rare. In fact, I am not sure it has happened to me yet. Ah Macross... You big beautiful mix of warfare and dancy pop numbers. Shredded mecha roar by with explosions everywhere all the while a songstress (or plural) belt out love ballads. meanwhile a love triangle (mostly 2 girls and 1 guy, with a couple exceptions) forms and causes for great soapy drama.  Originally I noted the fact that in the first 10-12 episodes it felt like the creators threw in everything but the... Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans

Nov 4, 2015

Give me a Mecha with a giant ass spear, and make it a battered Gundam in the hands of slightly older children soldiers.  Oh, and give the title some sort of kick ass name with metal and some body fluid as the subtex. I must admit, I have been jonsing for a mecha title in the vein of more realistic mecha titles of yore, like Gundam 08th, Votoms, or maybe even Fang of the Sun Dougram. In fact, in the case of the last title mentioned, a desert wasteland is a perfect backdrop. Let's face it; Gundam has been stumbling about a bit lately.  Gundam Age was too glossy and cumbersome, Gundam G... See full review

Lupin III: Part IV

Oct 10, 2015

It is ever so hard to define Lupin in an anime world of trope filled Shonen, Shojo, comedy, slice of life, supernatural, magical, mecha laden, tournament seeking, violent, monster of the week, moe and ecchi filled titles that anime is begrudgingly dumped into.  But if you want a little taste, Lupin is James Bond mixed with Mad magazine with an anime flair.  First off, this is a great nostalgic flashback to the lupin series that came before. Especially Lupin part2. It almost feels like a successor to Hayao Miyazaki's time long before Ghibli was a studio. Now, do you want a Lupin title to... See full review

Lupin III: Lupin Family All-Stars

Sep 2, 2015

This is going to be a short review. Why? This is a short show.  Like really short. Of all the Lupin titles, outside of the random late 60's short, this one is right up there for itty-bitty. It is 10 minutes and some of that is credits. The title is not going to make a lot of sense and becomes a game of Clue.  The mystery only becomes clear at the end of the episode (well, sorta) . Everyone in the Lupin group was invited by Lupin to show up on an island.  As each one arrives, there are accusations that not all is what it seems by everyone.  Just imagine a room full of people who all... Lupin III: Jigen's Gravestone

Stylish, slick and and with the guys from Redline and A Woman Names Fujiko Mine, behind the helm, you know it is going to be gloriously striking (more on that later). Outside of almost all Lupin series/movies OVA/specials, this one stands with very few as a rather Mature, gritty tale in the Lupin topology, with gunfights, car chases, and sexual sequences. It does sometimes feel like a show in the middle of a larger series. This is not a major problem, but will leave some people hoping for a continuation of the ongoing story. Got your Mecha checklist handy? The Mecha is piloted by a boy who could hardly hold a driver’s license.
There is political intrigue of governments and companies that pull strings in the background.
There is a Monster or fight of the week. There is not much you’re going to get out of this title past the standard. It does nothing more than pull off exactly what it set out to do. Make a colorful mecha title with a stack of young pretty characters.  It is pretty similar to about 10 mecha titles and the characters are nothing more than variations of Eureka 7 or Star Driver which are both... Lupin III Special 23: Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid

Jan 25, 2013

As far as Lupin movies/OAV's/TV Specials go, this is a steady Lupin title. It pulls all the right lupin-ish momnets and even has a great comical escape, But it does foray into something that many Lupin series do not go. Instead of just a treasure and a baddy who wants it the Lupin jumps for a little bit of the supernatural.  In fact it does this so much better than the Pycal special.  Now this is not completely out of the relm of Lupin, I mean he has driven a car along the side of a moutain, jumped out of a burning plane unscathed and his partiners have done everything under the sun from cutting...
