Live action recommendations.
Seeing that we have a recommendation base for anime, linked to other anime, I figured why not a recommendation of some titles that are live action. Similar titles are more or less similar in story/style/genre, but not maybe medium.
Like Naruto? Try Drunken Master.
Naruto. If you enjoyed any of the training aspects, with a Master and young somewhat unpredictable student, who is learning to be the best there, is. Nothing could be closer than the original Jackie Chan masterpiece of Drunken Master. You will feel like you have jumped right into a shonen storyline, as our fumbling young man, is taught the mastery of a formidable fighting style. It has comedy, some life lessons, and above all else, fighting.
Like Cowboy Bebop? Try Firefly.
These are two relatively short series, which are set in a sort of Space Western, where humans are branching out.
The crews on both of these shows take on odd jobs, just outside of the normal law. Both have episodic feel, yet both are on a set timeline, with continuity as well.
Both are set in a space future, where travel is only part of the adventure. Both titles have the “crew” living aboard ships that serve as a flying house. Both ships are a base of operations, but also a get them from place to place. ; Serenity in Firefly, Bebop in Cowboy Bebop.
Like the original Terminator? Try Black Magic 66
This one is in reverse, because I think many might have seen the live action first. A menacing robot, with a singular goal; kill who it is programmed to kill. In Terminator, it is more or less set to do it’s job on purpose, where as in B-66 it is more of an accident, still both have harrowing escapes, and a solid menace.
Like Zipang!? Try Final Countdown
If you’re interested in time travel, and naval action, both these titles will deliver.
To be honest, I think the creator Kaiji Kawaguchi lifted this idea right from the older Countdown, however he puts his own spin on it, making it a Japanese ship sent to the past, rather than an American one.
Both also delve into a moral compass; of what would you do if a future warship (with more power than all WWII vessels combined) went back in time. Do you chance changing history? Are you still obligated to defend your country, EVEN if what has happened already happened?
