Sword Art Online

Dec 23, 2012

Like so many others, I was downright thrilled to hear about a series set in a MMO environment, even more so when it was about a game that would lead to death in real life if you died in it. SAO was certainly one of my most anticipated shows this year. But if you're reading this review, you've most likely seen the score I gave to it and can therefore guess I'm not really about to shower this show with praise. So... let's get down to just what sucked about this show. If you haven't seen this show, a mild SPOILER ALERT. Story [2/10] It started out really well. The villain revealing himself and his plan was... See full review

Chaos;HEAd

Aug 16, 2011

Note: this review is more of a summary of how it works as an adaptation of the visual novel that's its source material. May not be very helpful to someone who hasn't played the visual novel. --- Creating believable horror usually exploits the fact that we fear the unknown. Therefore works of this genre mostly seem to be located either in abandoned, isolated locations or in settings with a lot of superstitious beliefs. The visual novel Chaos;Head, on the other hand, was delightful due to being set in present-day Tokyo, of all places, and still managing to create a threatening atmosphere despite the fact... Ping Pong Club

Aug 16, 2011

Oh, boy... Ping Pong Club. Thought it'd be ping pong perverted humor. Was wrong. It was a show that made being a pervert a goal in life, a passion, a direction in life that makes most other series' pervs who try to peep on girls in the onsen look downright decent and upstanding citizens. No chance to molest females was left unused, no chance to gross someone out with waving your dick around was ignored. And ping pong was pretty much ignored.

And speaking of waving your dick around, I think it struck me at around episode 8 or 9. Really, the perfect metaphor to watching this show is to... See full review

Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu

Aug 16, 2011

Ah, Nogizaka Haruka, which is probably better known as "that other show about an idol girl who turns out to be an otaku except it was made before OreImo".

The premise is simple enough: a girl who seems pretty much perfect on the surface is an otaku and a random guy finds this out, resulting in...

...and I'm guessing they kind of ran out of ideas what they'd actually do after that, since just about every imaginable anime series staple is somehow crammed into merely 12 episodes. After episode 9, I threw out a mostly joking statement about this series following a cliche... See full review

Toradora!

Aug 16, 2011

First, a bit of background that's probably good to know: as a whole, I usually tend to hate tsunderes who aren't a bad idea in theory but whose execution most often sucks and when they're also overtly violent, childish and voiced by Rie Kugimiya, we enter the realm of my most reviled and loathed elements across all anime.

So why'd I watch Toradora? First, it was lauded to me as an excellent romantic drama with a more mature atmosphere. Second, it was also praised for complex relationships also involving other people than the main couple, love triangles and even the side characters talking to each... See full review

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Aug 16, 2011

It's the little things that can make or break an anime. I don't think it has ever been clearer than when watching Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. I got attached to this series right from the first episode, yet if you asked me to tell why, probably couldn't since I'm not quite sure myself.

Well, anyways, the good points I can define. The characters and their actions are low key and believable enough to pass for real people and, while they can get very emotional and close to losing it, never really cross the line into Stupid Hysterical, a problem that plagues a bit too many shows.

The... See full review
