I'm glad you liked it (wow, didn't expect you to read it all in one go). I had a similar impression of the manga by the time I finished it. The societal focus was less prominen than that of Kurosawa's as a troubled individual, and while some things kind of veered into the absurd it was a fun, unconventional, interesting read. Even inspiring, I'd say, which is something the manganime media tends to lack.
If you ever have the time and feel like it I'd also recommend Buraiden Gai, by Fukumoto as well. It's way shorter and kind of a middle point between Akagi/Kaiji and Kurosawa: partly thriller (no gambling-oriented) and a bit of social drama/issues.
