When I was a child, I pretty much had no choice but to listen to my brother's CD's of soundtrack music since I shared the same room as him. I didn't dislike it at all at the time and I still don't. In fact, I think that's developed my music taste. I think listening to a lot of Nobuo Uematsu's work from Final Fantasy was definitely an enormous contributing factor. I was introduced to my favourite band of all time - The Cardiacs- years ago thanks to an old pal of mine. The point is interest comes from somewhere or another. No one is born with taste (though, if there's psychological studies out there, then I'd be delighted to read it). I think those with a hipster/elitest mentality have to remove their heads out of their asses. Some people don't even realise they are that sort of person.
On youtube, I always see these comments from people saying "x brought me here". Of course this sort of thing is open to all sorts of shit, specifically, hipster-eseque attacks. What I mean by this, of course, is comments along the lines of "x didn't bring me here; I've been a fan for them for a long time" or "like this if x didn't bring you here". The question is, why does it bother people if a show, book or film got people interested in a certain band they have loved for years bother them? Does it really matter how one discovered it?
I decided to finally give a second chance to 'Yes' today. I hadn't realised the end theme of JoJo was from them all this time. But now we have fans coming in saying JoJo brought them here and Yes fans letting it bother them for some strange reason. I know Yes is not that popular with the younger generation, but shouldn't these fans, who I assume complain how the new generation have piss poor taste in music, be happy they're listening to it? I'd like to go back to my first point: interest comes from somewhere or another. Is there a boundary crossed when it is discovered from a popular/new show? If they enjoy it, then it's really not anyone's problem, is it?
Christ on a fucking bike. Surely being an ass is the last thing veteran fans want to do? Then no one will ever want to be a fan or drive them away from listening to anything else. Then you'll go complain no one has any good taste!
While I've always been interested in film scores, I've found it hard to get into classical music. I don't know why. After watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes, I listened to a lot of great tracks and that helped me enter the world of classical music. In fact, I finally got into it by trying lots of different classical music uploaded on youtube. So I'm glad something has helped expand my tatse. In fact, I'm listening to classical more than ever, even more than the stuff I regularly listen to. I also enjoy learning about the composers and their music. I'm just one of the lucky ones who hasn't faced such ridiculous comments.
I'm not sure why people feel the need to attack others for the reasons mentioned. I wonder if they feel as if that particular band or whatever actually belongs to them? Do they feel superior to others because they have liked something longer than the other person? If that is so, they must some real complex they need to address.
