Note: This piece is opinionated.
It has grabbed my attention that many people hold different values in anime. I would like to explain factors that weight heavily on what I rate an anime.
I'll divide it in a couple of parts and explain shortly how much it weights in my opinion.
First, I would like to say plot. Plot is the most important thing in most animes, I don't mind episodic things too much, but often I get more satisfaction when an actual storyline is spanning over several episodes. This causes me to often rate episodic animes lower than people who like episodic animes. When an anime is plot driven a decent plot is just simply neccesary.
Animes with a solid plot are for example Full Metal Alchemist, Angel beats and Trigun.
Second is characters, characters usually need to be relatable to to some extend or completely on the other side of the scale. ''psychotic'' Especially the main characters need to have redeeming qualities. A bad tsundere usually lacks this as well as a lot of 'harem' leads. It's painful to watch anime with unlikable characters, though not impossible.
Well developed characters: Suigintou ( rozen maiden ), the cast of FMA , the main cast of Angelbeats
Originality, the average anime lack this to some extend. Orignality is pretty hard to find in most cases. Originality a breath of fresh air and leaves long term watchers more satisfied. Notably, an anime doesn't have to be original to be very good, I just helps.
Angel beats is very original in it's setting, Rozen Maiden's characters are fairly unique.
The World God Only Knows, is fairly unique among ''sort of harem'' it's type anime.
Animation, speaks for itself.
Note on Fanservice: When an anime is trying to be serious, it shouldn't contain large amounts of this. Subtle fanservice isn't too bad though. I feel that either end of the spectrum is better than hanging in the middle. Since many anime make fanservice feel more forced than neccesary. The more ecchi the anime the worse the plot isn't quite a lie. Ecchi is a means of getting fans outside actual good storytelling. However, even ecchi has it's limits, I hope... ( stares at Yumeria )
