Currently having only one episode out makes reviewing this difficult, but the quality of what has been producded so far makes it worth the effort. The viewer's introduction to Perkins and Botasky is short and sweet. Their mission is direct and to the point, but the character development and the emotion captured in this short is riviting. The animation style does an amazing job with color, light and shadow and an excellent job with texture. The sound is vivid and the background noises are only outshined by the voice acting. XXXholic strikes me as an anime that would make Granny Weatherwax proud. The story is largely character driven, but the plot hangs on a subtle moral conversation between Yuuko and Watanuki. By exposing the Shop's clients to Watanuki, the questions of personal responsibility v. self-reliance are explored and other more heavy handed moral questions are posed. The art style is unappealing. Elongating limbs or creating a more slender figure makes sense in most anime, but the proportions on most of the main characters are so disjointed it's visually jarring.
