Akai Ito (literally "Red Thread") is an independent anime short made by Kazuhiko Okushita.
A brief introduction to understand better the story.
An ancient Japanese and Chinese belief say that since we were born an invisible red thread bounds us to another person and that we are fated to meet and eventually marry him/her. (usually the thread starts from one person's little finger and arrives at the little finger of the other one)
This is the full text of the Chinese proverb
"An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet regardless of time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle but it will never break."
Okushita in this short took this popular myth and used it to describe the cycle of life. Yeah, in the short the thread breaks (like an heart) when the 2 lovers have an argument, but the woman sew the thread (their bound) back to his original form :) It's all very symbolic and metaphoric. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
For the ones interested in the basic concept of the short, a very similar cartoon tv series called "La Linea" (in English The line) has been animated around 30 years ago by Italian Osvaldo Cavandoli.
