Burst Angel

on

THE STORY: The story in Burst Angel was not entirely relevant I feel, since the anime strikes me overall as a more character driven style than anything.  The story was pretty lax.  Each episode seemed to be its own entity, especially towards the beginning, until I noticed that the enemies they faced had similarities and such that the characters in the show also began to notice.  The first 20 episodes honestly didn't feel all that character driven though. This, paired with the choppy story progression, did not strike me impressively at all.  The final four episodes brought it all... See full review

Bleach

on

I have not yet had the pleasure of having an anime so brilliantly executed as this one, be tarnished so wholly by the filler thrown into it. This is the reason that I attempt to stay away from many anime of extraordinary length.  Seasons One, Two, Three, Six, Seven, and Eight minus a couple episodes and a few more brief references to the episodes I've left out.  This is Bleach. All the extra filler nonsense doesn't exist in my review because I don't believe it a real portion of the anime itself.  If I were to rate the show as a whole I may be able to give it a 4, maybe.  That is... Black Cat

on

THE STORY: Well I s'pose I'll just jump into it here.  The story for Black Cat was not bad by any means, it was actually really, really good. They had an interesting story with our main protagonist, Train, led by what he'd learned from his lost, perhaps first, friend, to be the free thinking fighter for life that he never before saw in himself as an assassin for the agency known only as Chronos.  Fighting the good fight and befriending people along the way, the Black Cat, as was Train's code name in Chronos, learns of all the good that life has to offer, and that no matter who a person is... Black Blood Brothers

on

THE STORY: Interesting, that's about how I'd sum up this one.  A different take on yet another vampire driven anime, Black Blood Brothers takes many of the old traditional vampire strengths, weaknesses, and effects, which was very nice to see.  The show progressed at a rather unorthodox rate, with minor 30 second flashbacks and seemingly no real direction to speak of.  Episode after episode, I caught myself changing my underlying theory for where the show would be ending up and came to the realization that this would be an anime about the characters.  The story is there but the... Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy

on

THE STORY: Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy is the second installment in the calm Comedy-Romance series, and in many ways I can't help but feel that it falls short in comparison to the first season.   The first season had a great balance and story progression, but, in this season, the Romantic side of things was far more prominent.  At a few key points in the series it seemed as though the writers noticed this shift and attempted to cover it up with some quick, somewhat appeasing but ultimately ineffective, filler. I watched the series continue, and I couldn't help but notice some... See full review

Ah! My Goddess TV

on

THE STORY: Ah! My Goodness! (Pun intended) This anime has been a real refresher course for me after seeing so many serious anime and dragging myself through 009-1.  The story wasn't so demanding that every episode was a necessity, but it was certainly not in one's best interest to miss more than that at any given point in time. Moving slowly and gracefully the series tackles what Hollywood fails at time, and time again, the Comedy-Romance genre.  With a unique blend of Comedy at what I would say was 70% overall and the Romance being roughly 30%, Ah! My Goddess Season 1 progressively developed the... See full review

009-1

on

THE STORY: Story? Oh yeah. Now that you mention it, it did have a smidgen of story in there didn't it? Honestly, the "geniuses" behind this anime ought to be proud of themselves for making another anime that begs the question "Why did I just spend that chunk of my life watching this?". OK, getting serious now, the story wasn't so much horrendous as it was non-existent. From episode to episode there seems to be absolutely no congruency whatsoever aside from the accepted notion that time is passing and we are simply watching mission after mission that our main character... Afro Samurai

on

THE STORY:The Afro Samurai series is action packed to the brim!  So much so that it’s story line seems to be a bit stifled. I watched it all in one go, as I’m sure many have, since the five episodes flow more like a movie than your traditional series. Like in many movies, I was watching our hero enter odds far against him, and him coming out unscathed, which gets old, fast.  Afro enters a plethora of engagements with enemies pouring out of every corner, like a bad termite infestation, and Afro is the last scrap of wood. To be honest, when Afro was having a hard time with... See full review
