Anime in 200 Words: Elfen Lied
Premise: A teenage girl with a severe mental schism is found by a couple of normal teenagers, and they take her in and try to help her. The problem is that while one personality (Nyu) is safe to be around, the other (Lucy) is not, and the good Samaritans get pulled into a hidden war.
Nudity: I first watched Elfen Lied with a friend who ardently defended the plot and berated her by shouting “porn!” every time that Nyu/Lucy was naked. After a while, though, realized that most of it IS story-related, so it doesn’t bother me any more. Just be ready for it.
Gore: It’s there. Expect it.
Plot: I like this story, and part of that... a good deal of it actually, is because I understand and sympathize with Lucy. Yes, she’s homicidal, but at least I know WHY.
Powers: The invisible arms are a great idea: normal people can see the destruction, but they have no idea what’s happening, so it’s great for inducing terror. Plus, they have good range, and are really used well as weapons here.
Overall: Elfen Lied is a good show; it’s just not for kids.
