Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You

Oct 13, 2009

While the plot sounds dull, something about the way it's written is very engaging. I saved this for last this week because it sounded the worst, but it wound up being one of the best (neck & neck with kandachime). I had planned to only read the 2 vols required for the manga club, but had finished all the available chapters almost before I had even realized it. My one gripe about this series is the artwork. The exaggerated/chibi art used to emphasize certain reactions looks terrible (especially for the main character). To make matters worse, they use the gimmick way too much (especially with the main... Dragon Drive

Oct 2, 2009

The first half of this manga was great. However, this is one of those aggravating series which completely changes story & plot in the middle. After the initial plot concludes, a new & almost completely unrelated one ensues. In the second plot, Dragon Drive has been transformed into a card game and the star is a completely new character (although I believe he's related to one of the original heroes). The only returning character in the beginning is the announcer, Agent L. Some of the original characters do return much, MUCH later in the series, but even then they're little more than cameo appearances.

Kandachime

A good balance of plot and action. Not much to say about it, nothing stands out much as specifically good nor bad, but the overall impact is quite good.

Beyond Twilight

Oct 13, 2009

The story overall is good, but it's a slow read. It's not so much that the story itself is slow, just something about the way it's written. I, for one, just couldn't get into it enough to stop noticing the passage of time while I was reading. I gave it a high overall score because it is quite good, I just wish it were more engaging.

Yaiba

Oct 2, 2009

Man... This couldn't BE a more blatrant Dragonball ripoff if it tried. The art is very similar, the characters are very similar (a spiky-haired kid with superhuman strength & ninja skills, an older girl playing a nanny-like role, an irresponsible old geezer who's supposed to be teaching the kid, a villain who's a blatant piccolo ripoff). At first Yaiba at least tried to be a little unique, with the plot revolving around competition for some ancient cursed swords instead of hunting for dragon balls. However, starting around chapter 55 they go on a scavenger hunt for magical spheres, one of which will... See full review

Magic Insulator

I would advise against anyone picking this series up. While the art, story, characters, and everything else are quite good, it's naught but an exercise in frustration. It was dropped right in the middle of a cliffhanger, they didn't even give it a rushed ending. The final chapter ends with the good guys in trouble, in the midst of an ongoing plot, and that's it. I've been waiting an eternity for more chapters, and only just now realized that it was cancelled. I gave it a low overall score due to it's lack of an ending, for this ruins the whole experience.

Future-Retro Hero Story

Feb 22, 2012

This might be some kind of prequel to outlaw star, but it really bears no resemblance at all to it. Far from being a space based story, this thing is entirely a high school story, and not a very good one at that. The artwork also looks nothing like outlaw star, it bears a much stronger resemblance to ranma or to dragonball. If you're looking for a screwball school comedy, this is a decent choice. However, that is not what it is marketted as. It is promoted as being a space adventure, but that is just false advertising.

Zetman

This series started out really good, I would have rated the first part 4 stars or more. After a while though it made a huge shift in plot & characters, and seemed like a completely unrelated series. That part sucked major balls, and should be given a negative rating. If I had the capacity to give the series 2 seperate ratings, I would give the first part very high ones (probably 8/10), but the later part deserves very low ones for story & overall (probably 0.0003/10). The scores included here are the 2 sets averaged together.

Shinigami-sama ni Saigo no Onegai wo

Don't waste your time. Seriously, just don't. the series appears to have been cancelled, and after dragging out the mystery for an eternity, it dumps a bunch of clues in your lap in the final chapter, then ends the whole series without solving the mystery. The final line tell you the reader to "please think about the clues".

This series stinks, nuff said. The first 3/4 of the first volume was very slow, then they finally pick up the plot a bit in the final 1/4 with a surprise twist and then they end the volume without delving any further into the new plot twist. The second volume picks up with some almost completely unrelated characters & an unrelated plot. About 1/4 of the way in, it finally gets back to the main character & touches on one of the original plot points, but never does really progress the plot at all. In addition, the plot twist I mentioned earlier is never mentioned again in the second volume. All in... See full review
