Hana Yori Dango - The Movie

on Feb 13, 2005

Story
First a little bit of information: this is a story that isn’t related to the Hana Yori Dango TV universe at all. It’s a 30-minute movie with the same characters involved, and they all carry the same personalities as in the TV show. Frankly speaking, there is no way this 30-minute movie can stand on its own. I don’t know whether to rank this movie as a 1) fun "what-if" TV series side story or 2) standalone show that you watch without having seen the TV show. I strongly recommend that anyone watches the TV show first. It will make it a lot easier to watch the movie and will certainly remove... read more

Zone of the Enders: Idolo

on Aug 27, 2004

Story
This is a well done 50 minute OAV which builds on the famous mecha action game "Zone of the Enders". This show takes place five years prior to the events in the first Z.O.E game and works as a prequel which explains how the battle mechs called "Orbital Frames" came to be. Compared to other "Game -> Anime" conversions this one works very well, as the story itself isn't taken directly from a game. This is still an OAV which you can watch and enjoy without knowing anything about the ZOE games.
This is another take on the "mecha" theme but it is really a lot more than that. It's a... read more

Maria-sama ga Miteru ~Haru~

on Feb 18, 2005

Story
It's time for more Maria-sama ga Miteru. It's now past new year’s and our lovely gang face a partial breakup in a not too distant future: the Rosas will graduate and soon move to universities of their choice.

First of all I'd like to say that this is not a sequel, but a second half, a second season of the show. It's strongly recommended you read my review of the first half of the show, watch it, and then read this one. Furthermore I'll keep this quite brief and only talk about the differences.

The show kicks off around new year’s before graduation, and we get... read more

Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito

on Sep 9, 2004

Story
This is another one of those "spawned from H games" series. It was originally a H game released by ROOT in 2002. The TV series differs quite a bit from the game though, and while the ecchiness definitely is there, it's handled nicely and does not become annoying or overwhelming. Do not expect any H or yuri-action worth mentioning in this series.

There are things that the viewer should know when watching this series, as they basically throw you into a story without giving any background information. Luckily some people decided to write up a small page which explained the... read more

Melody of Oblivion

on Feb 5, 2005

Story
It's the 21st century and Monsters who looks like humans rule human society. They seemingly provide special services for so called Monster Union Agents, granting them wishes. But they don't come cheap, for the monsters feed on children and every once in a while a life-sacrifice has to be presented, or else the monster gets quite moody. The only ones who are able to battle against these creatures without either turning into a puppet or a stone figure are Melos Warriors, humans with special abilities. They all use a bow as their main weapon and they can do anything from shooting normal arrows to... read more

Silent Mobius

on Sep 8, 2004

Story
This is an interesting series which I feel is very underrated, more people should watch it. What we've got here is a nice cyberpunk story with a mature cast and a mature story. The AMP department consists entirely of women, women which are in the beginning in their mid twenties, not in their teens, as is the case with lots of anime out there. The character designs also feel very mature. If you like fanservice then this is the wrong anime, it's not something which belongs in it. Sure, we've got well trained police women wearing a leather police uniform..but that's pretty much it.

Zone of the Enders: Dolores

on Aug 27, 2004

Story
I thought this was going to be an all out serious show with lots of action and blood, fighting scenes etc. In the first episode we meet James who is a drunkard that wants to reconcile with his family, even though he chases other women. Then later on he discovers Dolores, who is pink and behaves like a confused, love struck woman. Not much action there. This made me a bit confused. It doesn't take long, however, until the action starts to unfold and soon the first mecha battle commences.
This is a great show which took me by surprise. Sure, it's not what I initially expected but that... read more

Appleseed Movie

on Jan 12, 2005

Story
It's time for another go at animating the cult manga "Appleseed" (by Masamune Shirow) spanning over four volumes and a databook. This manga is actually "ongoing". Even if it was some 14 years ago since Shirow wrote about things to come in Volume 5 in the databook, the project isn't dead. But when this fifth volume will reach the shelves...well..let's not speculate about that.

First we had the Appleseed OAV: a one episode story from the end of the 80's. It took parts out of manga volume 1 and 2 and compressed it all down to an hour or less. This caused a confusion amongst the... read more

Fafner

on Feb 6, 2005

Story
Welcome to the small island outside Japan. Here people go to work every day, kids go to school and life is good overall -- until the Festums come around. Festum is an unknown creature which hovers in the air. It’s big, golden and has various capabilities depending on the Festum type. To fight against these creatures Alvis (the local battle command which is located underground) prepares for battle, weapon depots rise from the ground, along the coastline rocket launchers appear, a shield is raised and fighter jets are sent out.

In addition, Alvis has something called "Fafner"... read more

Maria-sama ga Miteru

on Feb 5, 2005

Story
It’s time for yet another shoujo show review. This time it’s about the girls at the prestigious all-girls catholic school called Lillian. It was founded in the beginning of the 20th century and employs the ladder system. I don’t know whether the school actually exists or not, but it certainly is well documented -- complete with history, philosophy, and so on.

Marimite is originally a story that spans over 18+ 200 page volumes, so there is quite a lot of material. Out of those, the first twelve were animated in the form of two 13 episode seasons.

In Lillian... read more

Kannazuki no Miko

on Jan 26, 2005

Story
The story revolves mainly around two girls: one is Himeko, a quiet insecure crybaby, and the other is Chikane, a graceful confident and capable, albeit quiet, person. These two share the same destiny, for they are the Sun and Moon priestesses who have the role of protecting humanity against the evil Orochi and his eight henchmen (who want nothing more than to drown the earth in darkness).

The story is quite simple, but also complicated. Here we have two priestesses, and they are to protect the world from evil persons who have some sort of mecha that they can call on during... read more

Chrono Crusade

on Oct 10, 2004

Story
As always with GONZO, you can expect high class animation, fanservice here and there, action, comedy and dramatic moments -- Chrno Crusade is no different. The story follows the same pattern as Full Metal Panic. It kicks off with some action and lighthearted moments then goes into smaller arcs while there is an underlying plot being developed. The story jumps around like that for 2/3rd of the series and you get to know the characters, background etc. It's done in a standard, fully OK way. The last third is then decidated to serious action so to speak. Hardly any comedy, just action, drama and... read more

Hana Yori Dango

on Jan 26, 2005

Story
Hana Yori Dango is a shoujo anime that has been around since 96. It’s about Tsukushi who joins Eiken Academy – a school for upper-class people. This show deals with three themes. The first theme, which becomes apparent quite fast, is bullying/harassment. It isn’t quite sandbox bullying "Gimme back my spade! Gimme back my spade you dummy!" type of thing. This is real-life school (be it junior high, high-school or university, even workplace) harassment depicted in its purest, most raw, uncensored way.

Tsukushi comes from a poor family who insist on her going to Eiken... read more

Burst Angel

on Dec 2, 2004

Story
Here we are again, with one of Gonzo's later works. Being the Gonzo fan I am I of course watched it, and here is what I have to say about it.

What we have here is a special OPs group with lots of funding, lots of will power and four 'hot' chicks (pun intended). This group consists of women, girls, ladies, chicks -- whatever you wish to call them. Their mission in life is to bust some ass. They work for a corporation called Barren whose goal in life I won't mention.

Ohh yes, I almost forgot to mention their chef. He's 18 years old and wants to become a patissier... read more

You're Under Arrest!

on Nov 6, 2004

Story
First of all, this will be a bundle review which will deal with the first OAV and both of the TV Seasons. They go together and doing a seperate review for each would just duplicate what was already written in another review and so on. The movie however demands a seperate review and that goes for the 5 specials, as well as the last one episode OAV - "No Mercy! ". So, TV S1 is a direct continuation of the first OAV. Actually, they've bundled it up so that the first four episodes in S1 are the first OAV. So you can either choose to get your hands on the "OAV" or simply just get the first TV... read more

Hitsuji no Uta

on Oct 10, 2004

Story
They've done a good job with this series. It did feel a bit uncoordinated at times, but this is a four episode OAV and it's often very hard to avoid such things happening; there is simply not enough time.

Hitsuji No Uta is a series that I've anticipated for awhile and it was great to be able to sit down and watch all four episodes in a row. The topic is drama, horror and vampires. While it didn't feel very "horror like", there certainly were strong vampire and dramatic elements to it. It succeeds in the angst department, and together with the animation it presents a very dark... read more

Elfen Lied

on Oct 24, 2004

Story
Alright... what we've got here is a messy little story as the synopsis hints at.

What we have here is a species that has evolved further than your normal everyday human being. This species possesses so called "vectors", nifty little telekinetic things which are useful if you want to hang upside down in a tree and make a carrot salad... or let’s say, shred a human into tiny cute little pieces. Now, the problem here is that there are people who don't think that these evolved humans, or "diclonius" as they are called, should roam free. On the contrary, they should be subjected to... read more
