SECRET SANTA 2012 REVIEW
Toradora! was recommended to me as part of the 2012 Secret Santa recommendations on the forum, and was described as "a great slice of life anime... well worth watching." This statement pretty well sums up Toradora!.
Toradora! is the story of Ryuuji Takasu, a scary-looking but ultimately non-threatening high school student, and his encounters with Taiga Aisaka, a short-tempered and short-statured classmate of his. The two discover that both of them are in love with the other's best friend, and wacky antics ensue as the two vow to help each other court their chosen love. The setup of Toradora! is pretty much the most standard, clichéd romantic comedy premise of all, but the execution of the story is still done fairly well. The animation and sound are both solid, but not particularly remarkable.
The greatest strength of Toradora! is by far its characters; Toradora! features a remarkably deep and interesting cast. Taiga is surprisingly likeable for a tsundere, and Ryuuji is also very likeable. The supporting cast is phenomenal, and possibly even better than the two main characters. Minori in particular is an excellent character with both humor and depth.
A slice-of-life comedy show is only as strong as its characters, and Toradora! definitely has a good cast. Overall, fans of slice-of-life, romance, comedy, or tsunderes should certainly give Toradora! a watch. The whole show is legally available for free on Hulu (at least as of December 2012), which is a plus.
