Clannad After Story

Aug 6, 2012

My main problem with Clannad After Story is the first 8 episodes; those episodes really serve no purpose then to develope side characters from Clannad who don't really need developing. I just wanted to see Tomoyo and Nagsias' relationship develop - however after episode 8 this soely becomes the focus of the series - the ups and downs of there relationship and Tomoyo really develops into one animes best characters. Episodes 16-22 have some of the saddest moments I have ever seen from an anime and will test those with hearts of stone (I sobbed about 3 times during those episodes - episode 18 was the saddest).

Clannad had far more of a focused story then After Story did, but the later half starts to become far surperior simply because of how emotionally engaging it is - if it wasn't for those first 8 episodes then Clannad After Story could of been a masterpiece.

@Makoto What do you mean "If it wasn't for the ending?" The ending was something that made it a masterpeice, the way it drew you back to the scenes of the little girl and the robot that you saw throughout the series, tieing the whole anime together. Making you cry tears of joy knowing that everything was going to be alright with tomoya, nagisa and ushio, and that after all the hardships they faced (Even though technically it never really happened) that they were going to live happily ever after should bring joy throughout your body. Well, that is of course, if you're as emotional about anime as i am :p

Also about Clannad having a more focused story, I kind of disagree. Nagisa wanted to set up the drama club  from the very beginning but it wasn't done until the very end of the series. In Clannad it was about reviving the drama club whilst with After Stpry it was about finding the folklore of the hidden world and that was the story's main focus. So AS was much better at focusing on the story than Clannad.

I think if it wasn't for the ending it would have been a masterpiece. I enjoyed the first 8 episodes because it wasn't just about Tomoya and Nagisa. But that's just me.
