Where do I begin?

I have always had a love and fascination for animation. The very first movie I saw in the theater was An American Tail. Granted I was 3 so I don't remember much, but ever since then I have been a huge fan of animated movies and TV shows. I still watch Cartoon Network... although not to much lately since I got rid of my TV. Any way, I never thought much of anime growing up. Actually I didn't know it existed. I did watch shows like Noozles, The Adventures of Little Koala, Maya the Bee, and Transformers, but I did so without realizing they were anime. I don't think I really realized what anime was until DBZ and Sailor Moon became popular. But I didn't really like these shows, and once the mega hit Pokemon came out, I was under the impression that all anime was either fighting shows or for kids/girls... All except one title. I remember cruising the isles of my local video store when I saw the box cover for Ghost in the Shell. Even though I was 12ish, I still realized that this was something different (and not just because of the cleavage either :P ). I read the back, getting the gist of the story, and put the tape back on the shelf. There was no way my prudish mom was going to rent it for me, so I vowed that when I was old enough, I was going to rent it myself. Fast forward 4 years, I was hanging out with one of my friends from school when I saw some movies in his backpack. I asked him what they were, to which his reply was "Japanese cartoons". Before I even had a chance to make fun I saw that one of the tapes was Ghost in the Shell, the very same that I had vowed to watch oh so many years prior. After he let me borrow them, I raced home and popped it in. I don't think Ive ever seen an anime that had the same effect as GitS did that day. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. The animation was top notch, the music haunting, and story very intriguing. Loving the anime high, I proceeded to watch the other two movies i borrowed back to back. They happened to be Perfect Blue and Ninja Scroll. 9 years later I'm still a fan (although my tastes have changed quite a bit since then).

Ah, Princess Tutu is indeed marvellous. If you don't mind its shoujo packaging (which puts a lot of people off, sadly), you will find quite an intelligently scripted fable.

I also noticed you rated Escaflowne 4.5/5. You and I will certainly get on. Lol. Going by your Top 5, by the way, I recommend checking out anything by Satoshi Kon, as well as Studio 4C works. Just looking at your Top 5, I'm getting vivafruit/valondar vibes from you - they are two other reviewers with similar tastes but a much bigger anime list. :)
