I'm first going to say Armitage is a classic anime, if you havent seen this anime, your more then missing out
Armitage fits under the category of Cyberpunk Anime, a gritty, 80's style down and dirty genre that pays its homage to Blade Runner, but Armitage is hardly a rip-off, she may be a third but shes hardly "third-rate (actual line)
I would also recomend this over both Ghost in the Shell and Battle Angels, they cant hold a candle to this girl
Anyway onto the review:
My first experience with Armitage was the original OVA, and let me tell you, if you havent seen it, GET IT, why? because not only does it tie up any of those loose ends for those of you who have only seen the 2 movies, but has the best English Dub cast. In some Anime, there are those who fit there parts, for Armitage III OVA, they LIVE there parts. B.G. Mills IS Naomi Armitage, shes got the attitude, her voice not only fits the character but makes it better, and her acting is also hardly third-rate aswell, you feel every bit of emotion through her voice, from anguish and sadness, to joy and glee, its all there, she may have only ever done 2 roles in her acting career but i'm glad one of those was Armitage. Skip Stilrecht just like Ms. Mills, IS Ross Sylibus, I'm sure for those of you who saw Poly-Matrix first will always love Kiefer Sutherland, but his voice is too monotone for Ross, too I'm the ultra-cop hardass, and thats just not Ross, Skip Stilrecht is a very accomplished Voice Actor, and when i heard his voice as Ross, i was NOT dissapointed, he brings out Ross how he should be gruff, but with, again, emotion, from seeing Armitage hurt or kicking ass, You JUST cant get any better then these 2 voice actors, the OVA is a 10/10 in my book
Now I just want to say right now, I LOVED Poly-Matrix, anybody who says the OVA is better is right, but you have to see Poly-Matrix and i'll tell you why
1. The scenes left out, changed, and added: I knew from the start this was going to be a hacked up version, but this is supposed to be seen like a movie, and thats one thing i liked more about Poly Matrix, also they added in an extra intro which i also liked alot more then the OVA (The bank hiest with Armitage on the bike) that was badass, they did take out scenes but they didnt take away from the plot, or if they did, the actor usually said a line that phrased up what the whole scene was about. I liked the scenes they added in. Now the voice actors are a different story, Believe it or not, I thought Elizabeth Berkley did an outstanding Job, she's no B.G. Mills, but she put out a good performance, and in a few cases (not many, lol) she did better then Ms. Mills. I dont see why everyone says she did bad as none of her lines were drastically changed from the original. Now Kiefer Sutherland on the other hand, he is the only thing that took away from this movie, his voice just isnt cut out to be Ross, also he never gave out the right emotion, on top of the fact his lines were changed, like the part where Armitage first attacks D'anclaude, instead of saying "DONT DO IT, Just cuff 'em, your a police officer first Armitage, you know what your duty is, Robots arent the enemy of humans, I learned this...from my partner" (OVA) he says "dont do it, your a police officer first, you know what your duty is" Kiefer completely ruined the scene, he showed no emotion, on top of the fact he took away from the character bond you get when he says "i learned this from my partner" He might be a big name, but hes no Ross Syllibus, however in the last 15 minutes of the film, he redeems himself a little by getting more into character, Another thing i didnt like was the changing of "Danige" Hill to "Dunwich" Hill? why change it, especially if you notice on the computer that Eddy gives Ross in the cemetary, it still says "Danige" on it, lol
The ending, however, was MUCH better then the OVA, dont get me wrong, the OVA ending was pretty carefree and cool, but thats where i thought this movie hit a home run, They are standing on the hill Ross holding Armitage, Kiefer actually acting, its dark the city is lit up, Ross talks of himself carving out a place for himself, then for the 2 of them, Armitage holds him close and starts to cry and says "How about for 3..." and that did it for me, i was like wow, thats how the OVA should have ended, it just doesnt get better then that, 9/10 almost perfect
Dual Matrix was my favorite, some people liked it more, some people liked it less, either way its an outstanding movie, Juliette Lewis did a great job as Armitage, she sounded like an Older Mills, Skip Stilrecht returns as Ross, which made me VERY happy, Ahmed Best was in there...oh boy what a guy (for those of you who dont know hes the voice of Jar Jar Binks, lol) it was kinda cool to hear him curse as you wouldnt expect that from him, THANK GOD that Mona Marshall didnt sound like Izzy or Stans mom, especially playing such an important character like Julian, thank you for learning to act for that part, The 3D animation was also something that either made or broke people, i personally liked it, as they werent trying to reproduce the original, they accepted a new direction and made it work, the camera panning was kinda of weird to get used to as it was fast and smooth, The plot was solid, and thats another thing i liked better, it went from Happy to Depressing and Melencholy, when Ross had to obstantiate his vote, Armitage gets in trouble, Yoko is taken etc, yet there were still soft scenes, Yoko has to accept what her father just the same had to accept 8 years prior, to Armitage being a third, i thought it was also cool at the very end how it says "Happy 8th birthday mommy" that was such a cool scene (as Armitage was 8 years old 1994-2002), and things finally turned out for Armitage and Ross's family, if your going to end it like that, then by god thats the way to end it 11/10
All in all if you've read this entire thing, They are masterpieces, and you will never be dissapointed, because like Armitage herself once said, "I'm hardly third rate"
