Or Original vs. Copy, if you'd like.
Both series are popular shonens. Naruto's mangaka is Kishimoto Masashi. The series begins in '99. HxH's mangaka is Yoshihiro Togashi. The series begins in '98. Both are really good friends... And 60% of HxH has been copy-pasted into Naruto. :>
Gon ~ Naruto
Both have the same seyuu (a woman :P) and both are the typical main characters - they both are truly simple and stupid, but never give up and are unique in their own way... I guess that is true for almost every shonen.
Killua ~ Sasuke
Both are "cooler" than the main characters and both become the main character's best friend. Just like Naruto's trying to "save" Sasuke from vengeance, Gon saves Killua from the lonely future of an assasin and because of Gon, Killua opens his eyes to find freedom. Both have bigger brothers that have caused them to suffer and carry traumas. Troughout their lives, countless times both have heard their brothers' voices in their heads...Both clans (Zoldyck and Uchiha) are legendary and feared... Even their lightning techniques are identical.
Hisoka ~ Orochimaru
Both are enigmatic and creepy villains who want to do it with the main characters (:D), Orochimaru's aim is to become the ultimate ninja and learn all jutsus, Hisoka's is to find worthy opponents to fight with...
Genei Ryodan ~ Akatsuki
Both are the "hidden in the shadows" organizations everyone knows about, but are scaried to say a word. Both have insanely powerful members and both Hisoka and Orochimaru are parts of them, but leave eventually.
Chrollo Lucilfer ~ Itachi
I love them both. :P Both can copy their opponents' abilities. Their bonds respectively with Kurapika and Sasuke are 1:1 - Kurapika's clan has been murdered by Chrollo's organisation, so Kurapika wants to avenge his clan and his ultimate aim is to kill the Spiders and mainly Chrollo. Sasuke is the same. Kurapika becomes stronger when his eyes become red... Sharingan.
Hunter Exam ~ Chuunin Exam
Huuuh... In the fourth phase of the Hunter exam, all the examinees go to an island and have to collect other people's plates. In the second phase of the Chuunin exam, all the examinees go to an island have to collect other people's scrolls. xD The next phase in each series is fighting 1vs.1... In both one of the main villains appear and that pretty villains happen to be a part from a bigger organisation, but aren't really... Yeah, yeah...
And so on, and so on, and so on... :)
So, we all see that Naruto is Hunter X Hunter's copy, well, HxH's a lot better, heh.
Let's make the categories for comparison.
Both have interesting arts and designs. In HxH these are more original, heh. (Except for Akatsuki's cloaks, I guess... :P) But... HxH's animation is just fine, while...
There are TONS of examples such as this^... Naruto - 5; HxH - 7.
Both's OSTs and seyuus are great. Maybe Naruto's favour. But Hunter X Hunter's OP/EDs are a little better. Naruto - 8; HxH - 7.
While there are some likeable characters, they need ages to develop, and HxH's are cool from the beginning to the end without fail. While Gon and Killua are true friends, Naruto is an annoying fanboy of Sasuke. The situations in which Gon proves that he'll absolutely never give up are so much more interesting than those of Naruto's. All the characters I compared above, HxH's ones, the original ones, are far more complicated and just... cooler. Naruto - 6; HxH - 8.
While Naruto's extreeemely slow, drown in repeating flashbacks and FILLERS, and so much unnecessary things, HxH has none of these. The series is almost 1:1 like the manga. HxH is 92 episodes, and Naruto has more than four times more, not to mention all the movies and specials and so on. And you may bet, in HxH more things have happened... Not to mention in Naruto (in Shuppuuden particularly) there are tons of plotholes and uncertain things, while in HxH most of the things are clear (except for one or two things, but we're waiting for them in the manga)... And while Naruto fails to be original and 400 episodes brags about friendship vs. vengeance and war vs. peace, HxH is A LOT more mature and in the last arc in the manga it's compareable to a seinen... It's just better. A lot. Naruto - 6; HxH - 8.
Well, both have some interesting abilities and powers. But... Because of the slowness I just mentioned, some of the fights in Naruto are slow, too. And most of the action is interrupted by flashbacks and other shit, while in HxH the fights have a tempo, are well-animated and are simly better. Well, and less in number, heh. In Naruto everyone learns everything, and in HxH, everyone has his own abilities. The fighting system is the best I've seen and is 20 times more complicated than Naruto's. The abilities, too, are FAR more creative and cool. (see also Hisoka<3) Naruto - 7; HxH - 9.
How much I enjoyed it
I may say I enjoyed Naruto. Because of the likeable characters (mostly Akatsuki, hah), interesting abilities and the magic in it, even though I consantly pressed the "->" button, I was able to enjoy the anime pretty much. But while watching HxH, I bathed in awesomeness. :) Of course, HxH has its weak points, too, mainly the first ten episodes are very slow and hard to like, but after that... Naruto - 7; HxH - 8.
In the end
The result turned out to be Naruto - 39; HxH - 47. :)
I like Naruto, but I like HxH a more... I guess half ot the world doesn't share my opinion and I wonder why... I guess Naruto is more... easy and plain? Fuheh. Anyway, we all know Naruto is so much more popular than the original, obviously better HxH, and I will always wonder why is that.
Here we go with my first blog post. It wasn't short, but I'm somewhat satisfied with how I began. More and more to come.
