Nyan Koi!

on

This truly is a good anime. No matter how many times I watch it, I never get sick of it. Despite its lack of a real conclusion, this anime is very entertaining and is one of the better series that the harem genre of anime has to offer. Story: 7/10 The supernatural element added to the story with Junpei’s curse actually managed to help spice up the story and make it as memorable as it is. All the harem situations the main character confronts end up being as hilarious as they are because of how he must contend to the problems brought on by his cat curse as well juggle with impressing his crush... Ga-Rei -Zero-

on

I leave this series with much less excitement than I started it with. While it is by all means watchable, 12 episodes was definitely enough. Anything beyond that would be a waste of time. Story: 6/10 At its core, Ga-Rei: Zero is a tragedy about two step-sisters driven by their supernatural fates. Often times, the scenes of the sisters’ ever-changing relationship were very interesting to watch. However, almost everything else that took up screen time was underwhelming, mediocre, or just plain confusing. When the step-sisters were not in focus, what would take over would be either the unconvincing... See full review

Baccano!

on

Well, this stinks. I wanted to write another positive review so I chose this anime completely convinced that I would like it. What I thought would be a thrilling action show with a large cast and surprises at every turn ended up being very underwhelming, superficial, and preachy. It starts off really boring and then drags on for much too long even though its 13-episode length (16-episode length if you include the specials) would make you think it wouldn’t. Story: 4/10   This anime has, I want to say, three different storylines going on in it; all of which are trying to be told at the same... See full review

Mushishi

on

Wow! I can’t even remember the last time I had been this absorbed in a fictional world just by watching it. I am so glad that a good friend of mine told me about this anime and I am looking forward to continuing this series, seeing as there is more than one season. Story: 10/10   This anime is a collection of stories about the accomplishments of Ginko, a man who makes a living curing people afflicted by entities referred to as ‘mushi’. From the way Ginko interacts with the people, the mushi, and well essentially the whole world around him, you can really tell just what a true... See full review

Usagi Drop

When I first decided to watch this anime, I was very worried that I wasn’t going to like it. It seems that popular anime and I don’t get along very well and I was concerned that even though I was very interested in watching this anime, I would end up disliking it just like I had with several other beloved anime. However, this one really caught me by surprise and I can proudly say that I am glad to have watched it and will likely watch it again. Story: 7.9/10 I started the first episode nervous that I would become uninterested in the show over time. But as the series went on, I found myself... See full review

Non Non Biyori

on

This is a very good slice of life anime. I’ll likely watch the second season and the OVAs as well. Story: 7.6/10 The comedic situations that these characters get in are pretty hilarious and well thought out. I laughed during just about every episode, all of which were really cute and pleasant to watch. There was definitely more of a focus on making the audience laugh rather than developing the characters but that’s okay. In this case, I didn’t mind too much as the comedy still made up for it for the most part. Animation: 9.6/10 Everything about the animation was superb, from the... See full review

Baby Steps

on

When I think of sports anime, I usually envision a team of at least six members where the writers will try to give an equal amount of screen time to each character so that one won’t seem more important than another. But this is not the case in Baby Steps. After watching the first three episodes, you can pretty much tell that this is the story of Eiichiro Maruo and no one else. Funny how this simple change actually made the series feel quite refreshing and the tournaments feel more engaging. Story: 8/10 I’d give a higher score except an unrealistic aspect of the story prevents me from... See full review

Clannad Movie

on

Clannad Movie has been mostly hated upon as being an insult to the TV version and everything it did. As someone who hated the TV series but loved the movie, I think it’s a shame that the things that make the movie so great go unappreciated. It’s still the same story, it’s just told differently and has a much more pleasant and refreshing atmosphere. Sure, it’s not perfect, but I’d say it’s a great improvement from the TV series. Story: 8/10   Like the TV series, it’s a story about a teenage boy who helps a girl perform a play as they get to know each other... See full review

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

on

Well, this probably goes without saying but if you watched the Haruhi Suzumiya TV series and you liked them, then you will definitely love this movie. However, if you’re like me and hated the shows yet watched them anyway for some reason, you may want to use your own discretion. This movie is really no different from watching a few episodes of the TV series but the change of format made it way more bearable and I actually liked it. Story: 5/10   As the title would suggest, Haruhi is not the focus of the movie. Instead we follow Kyon around as he tries to make sense of a mysterious change... See full review

Grave of the Fireflies

on

Grave of the Fireflies is by far one of the best war films I have ever seen. While it may be very sad, I think it is a good movie to watch and is probably the most down-to-earth movie produced by Studio Ghibli. Story: 8/10 The story follows Seita and Setsuko, two siblings who have to survive in Japan during WW2 on their own. We find them having to suffer from hunger, loss of home, loss of a loved one, and much more. It’s horrible to have to see what they go through. Watching them, you’ll wish for a miracle to occur that will change their lives for the better, despite already knowing the... See full review

Black Blood Brothers

Black Blood Brothers is a very good anime. It’s just a 12-episode action series that honestly does not take very long to finish. There is so much excitement and thrills packed into it that I think any action fan will want to watch this. Story: 9/10   The story follows two vampire brothers moving to an area called the “Special Zone” where they will be able to exist peacefully with humans and other vampires. The older brother, Jirou, bravely prevented a disaster at the hands of a vicious group of vampires known as The Kowloon Children in a war 10 years prior. However, certain... See full review

Kimi ni Todoke

on

If there was an anime out there that was made for the sole purpose of pandering to teenage girls, then it has to be none other than Kimi ni Todoke.   At first, it seems like the concept is going to be unique from the typical girl-meets-boy shoujo story. The main girl is not throwing herself at boys in a quest for love, her female friends are not just there to remind the audience where she is in her progressing relationship they are actually something that she needs to earn, she can speak up in the face of a laughing crowd, and no one seems to be facing any sort of serious family or childhood trauma... Hanayamata

on

I decided to watch this anime due to its resemblance to K-On!, one of my favorite school-life comedies. Sadly, I discovered that not only did it resemble K-On!, but it completely ripped-off K-On!. It tried to be just like K-On! without any sort of understanding as to why K-On! is so awesome. HaNaYaMaTa fails to be its own thing, and even worse, fails to be decently entertaining.   Story: 5.5/10   This anime is about Naru Sekiya, a gloomy middle school student who is prone to whining and acting depressed because she doesn’t believe there is anything special about her. I’ve watched Clannad twice. I examined it very thoroughly. And even then, I still do not understand what is so appealing about this anime. Well, it surpassed my expectations a little bit… I had gone in thinking it was going to be just like Air TV… but no… thankfully it didn’t stoop to those levels. It didn’t make me want to bang my head in rage repeatedly. Nevertheless, it left me with plenty of irritation and a headache. K-On!!

Going into K-On!!, I figured it would be of the same quality as the first season (the first season was very good, but not good enough to make me love the show). So, obviously I was not expecting very much. That’s why it took me to such surprise when I ended up loving the second season and therefore decided that it needed a higher score than its predecessor. It this season, the characters are more likeable, the comedy has been upped, and the plot focuses more on certain events in the girls’ lives and follows them in a cohesive plot-like manner (now the episodes are no longer episodic and random... If you have not already seen this anime, it’s likely that you have at least heard of it somewhere. You may have heard about the power in the title, Geass. You may possibly know how much loved and hated the main character is. Or possibly you’ve heard about the mecha elements. Well, I was still pretty new to anime when I first about this anime, and I can assure you I had no idea what the heck ‘Geass’ was and I had the impression that the main character was a hit or miss but I didn’t know to what extent. This was one of the first animes I had ever watched when I first decided to explore anime. I decided to pick it up because at that time, it had just recently finished airing and the series finale just happened to be on the day before my birthday. What kept me dedicated to watching it was not the fact that it was only a mere 11 episodes, but because it was so interesting and I was already starting to like some of the characters, I just couldn’t stop after I started. Death Note is a very popular anime for understandable reasons. I, personally, would not call it the greatest anime ever made, but I really did enjoy it and it will probably stick with me for a long time. If you, by any chance, have not seen it yet, I can assure you that it is very much worth watching. It portrays a pretty accurate and chilling progression from indifferent, yet idealistic to corrupt and insane due to power in a teenage boy who was looking to change the world.   Story: 9/10   This was a very original plot. I really liked the pacing and the complexity throughout the series. But... See full review

I picked up this anime because I wanted to watch something lighthearted and innocent. And this one just seemed to fit the budget. While Angelic Layer did manage to remain lighthearted and innocent throughout the entirety of its 26-episode run, so much about it pissed me off. Now, this anime had some very positive aspects as well, they just weren’t present enough to get it a better score from me.   Story: 5.7/10   It starts off with some potential, the young girl protagonist goes to live with her aunt in Tokyo, becomes interested in a game she saw on TV, decides to try it out, and makes... This was a good anime with a pretty decent premise. I enjoyed watching it, and I could probably watch it again if I wanted to. However, this really isn’t the best of the all of the survival game animes out there. And this anime probably could have been better if it weren’t for a few things.   Story: 6.5/10   With survival games being so damn popular and so overdone, you really need to do something new with it if you want to make it into something special. Sure, having a bunch of people who have earned the hate of people they know be nominated for a deadly survival game is a great... See full review

Topped with the fact that the premise of the show reminded me of Lovely Complex (a great romantic comedy), I thought for sure that I, like many other anime fans, would come to adore this popular anime and enjoy it immensely.   Unfortunately, that was not the case.   By episode 9, I realized that I wasn’t really enjoying this anime as I kept... I don’t think I’ve ever been more impressed with any other title in the shoujo genre. The pacing and character development is absolutely remarkable. It is because Ouran Highschool Host Club was so successful that it has become the roots of other titles in the reverse harem genre that have attempted to be its equivalent. But no matter what else comes out, it seems that Ouran Highschool Host Club will always be the best in the world of one girl and many guys.
