Hi!

Here's my anime adventure:

I got into anime from Toonami on Cartoon Network when I came home from school as well as Saturday moring cartoons on Kids WB.  My first favorites were the Dragon Ball series, Pokemon, YuGiOh - basically every shallow shonen you can imagine. But hey, grotesquely muscled men screaming their lungs out as they powered up for five episodes in a row was just plain cool when I was ten. Just for the record, if I ever end up having to sit through more of Sailor Moon I'm going to end up completing some serious anger management therapy on the faces of unfortunate passerby.

After I grew out of the cartoons, I wasn't really into anime for a long time.  Eventually my sister dragged me to an anime convention, Anime Boston. I was lured by the presence of a virtually 24-hours-a-day video game room with tournaments.  While there, I didn't even go to any events, I just amused myself watching cosplayers and PLAYING VIDEO GAMES ALL DAY - ah, good times.  Funnily enough, when I got back to our hotel room one night in the middle of the convention, the second episode of Eureka 7 was on Adult Swim which I just happened to flip to.  I was instantly hooked by the humor.  My sister introduced me to the concept of a "fansub" and I ferociously hunted down every video and watched it through.  My appetite sated, I moved on.

Eventually I got bored with Halo 3 and flash games and I trawled the internet for a new kind of entertainment.  I quickly ran into Bleach, and my fervor returned.  My then life consisted of eating, sleeping, using the bathroom and watching bleach for about a week, suddenly screeching to a halt at the latest episode.  To my despair, the endless fountain of wonder had dried up, but there was no turning back now: I knew that if I didn't have enough heroin, I'd have to turn to crack and bide my time.  Bring on the anime!

My sister suggested Naruto (obviously similar, but I knew little at this point).  The English dub on toonami failed to catch my interest, but as I watched the fansubs I was enthralled in just the same manner. Not wanting my anime appreciation to drift towards the realm of shonen-zombie-fanboyism, she then steered me to Neon Genesis Evangelion, which was quite the experience, to say the least.  I realized that this medium had more to offer than pure entertainment.

This process cemented me firmly to the world of Japanese animation and formed the basis for my odd, almost contradicting enjoyment of both lighthearted, sometimes mindless, and always action-packed shonen, as well as depressing mindfucks.  Eureka 7 is still as close to a pure mix of shonen and mindfuck that I've seen.

Once I learned that the manga storylines were far ahead of their anime counterparts, I quickly blasted through them.  Having already been more of a reader than a TV drone, I took to it like a fish to water and discovered that manga often are better than the anime, just like the movie is never quite as good as the book.  In seaching for manga and anime recommendations and reviews to feed my hunger with healthy choices, I stumbled upon Anime-Planet using Google.  The rest, as they say, is history.

If you've actually read all this, wow, thanks for showing such interest in me.  Should I be flattered or creeped out? I suppose I'd give you a cookie in either case, but I can't really do that over the internet.  It's the thought that counts though.

I mostly use Anime-Planet to keep track of anime and manga and find new shows and comics. When the mood strikes me, I write reviews and recommendations as well. Hope to see you around this awesome website!
