She and Her Cat

Jul 16, 2011

This OVA, though barely five minutes long, has more emotional depth and impact than many longer anime.
Animation: (10/10) The animation is, simply put, incredible. Beautifully drawn black and white scenes that are contrasted against detailed backgrounds - this could even remind someone of an old live-action film (as improbable as that sounds, just watch it yourself). Everything looks incredibly realistic except for the cat, but it was purposefully drawn in a simplistic way to put emphasis on its persona and plight. Sound: (6/10) There was very little music that I can remember but I liked the... See full review

Pokemon

Jul 16, 2011

Pokemon was born out of Satoshi Tajiri’s love for catching bugs with a net, and has since become a massive world-wide phenomenon that reached every corner of the globe. It spread like a contagious disease making young kids (and even adults alike) cry out brilliant lines at their GameBoy screens like: “Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!” or memorizing very useful data like the Strength of a level 13 Bulbasaur. This fad was seemingly here to stay. Unfortunately, those happy times are long over, and those same kids who knew the evolution of a Psyduck, when they couldn’t even remember all... See full review

Candidate for Goddess

Jul 15, 2011

Candidate for Goddess can be more aptly described as being one big, juicy bait.

It presents potential viewers with its premiere episode ‘00’, bountiful amounts of eye-candy, a seemingly interesting plot filled with mystery and lots of space battles to satisfy even the most hard-core action fans. However, what this anime doesn’t want you to know is one dark, little secret: There is no ending. It piles on with every episode more drama, more symbolism, more of everything and just when you expect something epic to happen, you’re just left with thin air. I won’t... See full review

Boku wa Kuma

Jul 20, 2011

I'm a sucker for cute animals. When I accidentally stumbled upon the music video Boku Wa Kuma, I was delighted to find that it was about the cuddliest bear I've seen since the Care Bears. While the music video does not offer much in terms of character and story, it's a good waste of two minutes if you want to see a loveable bear do adorable things. Story: (1/10) There isn't much of a plot to begin with; it's about an average day in the life of a bear. The problem is the bear's life is pretty mundane and boring – he doesn't do much besides sweep his room and wear buttons for eyes. In fact, the high... See full review

Meiko Haigo: Dore Dore no Uta

Jul 21, 2011

We are born, we live, and we die. This is the inescapable cycle of life that every living being is a part of in the past, present, and future. Using bugs as a metaphor for life – both big and small – and a curious, cheerful protagonist that does not shy away from death, Dore Dore No Uta is a short music video for children that deals with a topic that not many of us want to think about. Story: (2/10) The plot is non-existent, other than a girl's journey through the day-to-day life of bugs. They go to work, have children, those children grow up and have children, then they all die. But life goes... See full review

Love Hina

Jul 17, 2011

Absurd, ridiculous and just plain idiotic, Love Hina is mindless entertainment for those days when you want to turn your brain off. Love Hina is about a run-of-the-mill wimp named Keitaro who develops a crush at a very young age to his nameless childhood sweetheart. Unfortunately, she has to move away. While running after the moving van, he promises her that he would get into Tokyo University – one of the most prestigious and hard-to-get-into universities of Japan – and find her at all costs. Years pass, and he fails the entrance exams of Tokyo University. His parents kick him out of the house... See full review
