Kakegurui

Jul 13, 2019

I reserve 10s for masterpieces that transcend a commercial product, and while Kakegurui does everything right, it didn’t change my life for the better, it wasn’t a religious experience. It was, however, the ideal that I desire from my media. Essentially perfect. Fantastic music, fantastic animation (aside from some obvious cgi occasionally), and an appealing setting all support the main attraction. Without the proper execution of the story, none of these external factors would matter. The thing that makes me the most happy in anime is when characters get put in tough situations and find a... The Tatami Galaxy

Jun 7, 2016

The Tatami Galaxy should have been a movie. That's my criticism in a nutshell. While I was watching Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei, I was struck by the feeling that it didn't quite feel like an anime. I don't mean that because it wasn't filled with accidental groping and meaningless drama born from misunderstandings, or even that its art style wasn't generic sparkly eye bullshit. What I realized in the final episode was that Tatami Galaxy didn't feel like an Anime Show, but rather felt like an Anime Movie in every aspect. The themes, the subject matter, the presentation, the art, the narrative, the execution... See full review

Toradora!

May 25, 2016

I just finished my rewatch of Toradora. My tastes have changed a lot since my first viewing, and I have a far more critical eye. Sometimes I wish it weren't so critical. I first watched Toradora very early on in my anime watching career. At that time, I thought it was amazing. I thought very highly of it as a romance, and at that time the only other romance show I had watched was Spice and Wolf. Still, even with my unrefined taste I could recognize that there were problems with the show, and that it wasn't the greatest thing ever, even if I couldn't pinpoint what the problems were. My assesment of the... See full review

Btooom!

Apr 22, 2016

To start off, I just want to say I'm willing to excuse a lot. I intentionally went into this wanting to watch a show that wouldn't challenge me. I wanted something dumb, where I could turn off my brain and have a good time.

That being said, Btooom is awful. I used to think being boring was the worst crime entertainment could commit, but I know better now. A show can be so bad that it can have a negative effect on you. It goes beyond being boring, and is painful to watch. I can handwave that somehow the bags are intact after their wearer has been killed. I can ignore how close the characters get... See full review

Koi Kaze

Apr 15, 2016

If the subject of incest is taboo for you, this might be a riviting drama. But to someone who that topic is about as shocking as water in a glass, there needs to be more beneath the abrasive surface. That's me. Incest even used to be my thing, until I got oversaturated with it, and now it feels boring. So, as it is with all things, you may have a totally different experiance than me.  However, since I am not emotionally moved by the taboo, something this anime choses to ride upon and make its emotional impacts with, I am especially equpped to examine its construction from a technical standpoint. The... See full review

Plastic Memories

Nov 12, 2015

I don't review things the way others do. There's no set formula, I don't like using numbers, and each review is pretty much unique. They're also never designed with someone who hasn't watched the show in mind. My goal isn't to get people to watch or not watch a show, it's to lay out my thoughts on the show. This is why each one is different, because with each show that moves me enough to put words down strikes me with something new. However, this time I will say if you have not watched the show and you think it might interest you, and you're in the mood to be sad, I think you should watch it. I thought it... See full review

5 Centimeters per Second

Sep 30, 2015

Depressing. That's what this was. Depressing and nothing else. I didn't learn anything from this, I didn't get any enjoyment out of this, all that happened was I watched a protagonist fall deeper and deeper into depression because of his life circumstances.  I don't know if that's your idea of a good time, but it's certainly not mine. A lot of people say this is sad. It wasn't. Sadness is something, there's even a certain gratification in sadness. It can feel good to cry. I didn't shed a single tear watching this, and I'm not opposed to bawling my eyes out over a show, not just in sad moments, but... See full review

Claymore

Sep 27, 2015

For starters, this isn't going to be something you should read to see whether it's good enough to watch, DON'T WATCH THIS ANIME, READ THE MANGA. The manga is excellent, nearly perfect, this show is shit in comparison, and manages to miss a lot about what's great with the manga.  I'm going to be spoiling all over the place so be warned. This is about me discussing whether or not this was a good show. The answer to that question is... it's both. Story I have never been so bounced around in levels of enjoyment for anything in my entire life. Some parts were 5 star perfect, others were insufferable... See full review

Dance in the Vampire Bund

Feb 14, 2012

I expected a lot more from Dance in the Vampire Bund then I got. I had high expectations because of the begining. It was uniqe, it was cool, and it was new. And this is a vampire show. Thats hard to do in this day and age.  Basic Idea So the world finds out that vampires are real, due to an announcement by the vampire queen. The vampire queen wants to make a vampire haven on an island outside of japan. The vampire queen also has a special intrest in a seemingly regular school boy who has lost his memories. What I Expected Well, from what the first half gave me, I was expecting something ground... See full review

Oreimo

Feb 6, 2012

Okay, the score may not make sense when you first look at it, with a 2 overall yet all but one of the fields are above a 4, but sometimes you just need to add an extra catergory "expectations"... because this didn't live up to mine at at all.  The animation was solid. I like the art stlye. The sound was also good, I liked the OP and ED songs. But theses things don't normaly break an anime experiance. The characters and story are key. Now the story was pretty good. It made sense (except for a few major plot devices that were just dropped and forgotten). The characters were actually pretty... See full review
