Canaan

Nov 18, 2010

Canaan grabs hold of a familiar action story trope and twists it into something far more meaningful, resulting in an eyegasm of hormone-fueled firefights!   The plot follows three individuals with differing motives. First being our heroine, Canaan, who is a young assassin trained to use her power of Synthesia to fulfill contractual obligations. Synthesia is a mental mutation that blends all five senses into one amalgam of sensory overload. Colors exhude emotions, smells have tastes, sounds have smells, and any other crazy combination that could come to mind. This results in a devastating power for... See full review

Baccano!

Oct 13, 2010

I realize I'm long overdue for another review, but I've been watching fewer anime recently in preparation for the relatively weak winter release schedule. I promise I'm here to make up for it with an astounding new title, Baccano! Place your bets folks, this is going to be a bumpy ride! Baccano is primarily set in early 1930's America, a time of when speakeasies, Mafia families, and railroads reigned supreme. But, as with most unique anime, there exists a distinct twist to this seemingly pedestrian setting. Our tale follows a merry band of "immortals", that have, through... See full review

Hell Girl

Oct 13, 2010

Hell Girl should not be missed, finally a show where everyone receives their "just desserts"!  Hell Girl is an anime that focuses on the (after)life of Ai Enma. Ai, for reasons unknown without spoilers, is tasked with essentially becoming the Japanese Grim Reaper/Harbinger of Vengeance. At midnight, there exists a website (hellcorrespondence.com) through which a person can enter the name of anyone that they wish to die. If their request is accepted, they will be visited shortly after by the Hell Girl. During their visit Ai offers them a straw doll with a red string around its... See full review

Full Metal Panic!

Apr 17, 2010

Full Metal Panic season one was originally released way back in 2002 by Gonzo animation. Now when this anime originally aired, the transition from cell to computer animation was taking place. Fortunately for us, Gonzo did an animation job that would rival that of other anime to be released years later. Full Metal Panic's animation style was considered revolutionary and groundbreaking when it originally aired, and this still holds true today, the style is fantastic and manages to stand up to the trials of the cruel mistress of time. Now I could go on all day about how pleasant it is to look at, but... See full review

Spice and Wolf

Jan 27, 2010

Now, I don't know how many of you have heard of this show, but all I knew before I watched it was the that the trailer made it look mildly amusing. However, I watched a few reviews for the show and my curiosity was piqued, which made me go onto Funimation's website and watch a part of the first episode to test whether or not it had the substance to grip and entertain me. It did, so much so that I watched all of it and purchased the box set ^_^!          Spice and Wolf utilizes an animation style that is very fitting... See full review
