All right, you pushy bastard. So I'm watching Touch at the same time as Cross Game. I'll try to get maybe to episode 20 or so of Touch, and that should give me a good enough grounding for when I tackle Cross Game. Two eps down, and I can see the wholesome humour and characterisation shining bright and clear. Ko is pretty much Tatsuya and with Kazuya's skill. I adore the interpersonal drama - the three's relationship as best friends is so thoroughly realised already. Oh, and awesome soundtrack.

I don't try to "deal" with your walls of text. I read them thoroughly so I can give you considered responses.

I understand your reservations, but they're not applicable to my reviewing. I am not like that person who's never read anything other than Harry Potter. I may not know Touch (yet), but I know 257 other anime and about 30 dropped stuff and 6 watching. Out of those, a handful are sports shows. I've watched a lot of good drama and romance as well. That's enough of a context to judge Cross Game's relative worth.

Most importantly, telling me that Adachi failed to do something previously says more about Adachi's progress than it does about Cross Game inherently. A work can be reviewed on its own merits without prior knowledge of how it came to be (incl. who made it and what previous works existed). Like you, though, I do agree that reviewers work best when armed with prior knowledge, so I thank you for all the info you gave me. I will try to read around to get a better idea of the creator's earlier efforts.

Anyway, all in all, when I review Cross Game, I will not be thinking 'How has Adachi failed again/bettered himself?' but 'How good is this compared to Major, the other great baseball show I've seen? Higher or lower? How does it compare to other drama-oriented sports shows I've seen? Higher or lower? Will the target audience appreciate what it has to offer?' And that is enough to give me a rating consistent with all my other ratings.

Hope that answers your query.

Hey there, thanks for all those links. That's great. Means I haven't got to worry abotu hunting out new manga for the next year.

As for Touch, fine, FINE, I'll bloody check it out. But not now exactly. I have my hands full adoring every minute of Cross Game. Moreover, it's not like I'm new to sports anime, so Cross Game will get a fair trial in relation to other shows I've seen. I have also been told I cannot in any way call myself a sports anime fan unless I've seen Slam Dunk, so that's on my list too.

Between those, Ikkoku and lots of mecha show I keep telling myself to get round to, I'm sort of swamped.

Which reminds me. What did you think of Turn A Gundam? I've been told I'll like it a lot.

I finished reading volume 1. I read it in one go. Now my thoughts are churning. I enjoyed it a lot. And now I am aware why I gave Onani Master Kurosawa 7.5, because otherwise Tanpenshu would have nowhere to go in the scale. It deserves 8.5.

I will say that for now that the linking theme is just 'struggling to exist'. Not all the stories are ultimately tragic (the last one about the stage play isn't), although all involve a tragedy in some significant way. They also occupy completely different universes. But all the characters in them are struggling to ascribe some kind of meaning to their lives and just living.

PS. I also adore how they all start in medias res. It made them compulsive reads.

Tanpenshu V1 arrived! I took a sneak peek at the first few pages. Great opening. Sort of hard-boiled, in medias res drama I like. I shall get properly tucked into it before bed.

And it shouldn't be hard to review as long as it leaves me feeling something. After listening to AWO podcast, though, I want to check out Peepo Choo as the next manga. Only three volumes and the artwork looks stunning. Plus, the author Filipe Smith is hawwwwwt!
