Kijin Gahou

Aug 22, 2014

I don't even know anymore. This manga is one of the most vile, disgusting, bizarre, weird and perplexing things that I have ever read.

Kijin Gahou is a collection of short stories by guro mangaka Shintarou Kago. Guro (or ero guro) is a literary and artistic movement that focuses on erotic and grotesque imagery (thanks Wikipedia!). And well, this manga certainly doesn't disappoint when it comes to that. You have girls performing harakiri as a sort of fashion fad, flower arrangement with (dead) foetuses and Santa Claus burying people under dildos and porn magazines. And those aren't even the weirdest ones. Some of the stories manage to give off a sense of satire. Harakiri was obviously a dig at group pressure and the need to fit in, but it's kind of hard to concentrate on that when you see girls choking each other with their intestines. One story genuinely made me laugh because it was freaking ridiculous. But all of them will scar your soul. All of them. No exceptions.

Special mention to Suck it, which will haunt me in my nightmares forever. I could handle the weirdness and black humour in the other ones, but that chapter... It was so grotesque, so far out there, so genuinely, mind-boggingly revolting that I advise you to avoid it at all costs. The other stories are nauseating in their own way, but it's still bearable. I can't imagine anyone liking Suck it though. Really, don't make the same mistake I made.

If you're reading this for the Bizarro badge, just stick to Holy Night. Maybe try out Harakiri, the other ones are really not worth the time.
