Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Kai is really just another entry into the long line of disappointing sequels. It doesn't hold up to the original series in any meaningful way, and decides to go for a change in pace and tone that is so different from the first that I can't believe it was produced by the same group of people. There isn't anything particularly awful about this show, but when you're creating a sequel for a series that was really special, "average" is a pretty hefty criticism. When I first looked at Hayate no Gotoku, I definitely didn't expect it to be a show I'd end up enjoying. Just look at the plot: a boy goes to work for a 13 year-old girl as a fighting butler in order to pay off his debt. Then there's the whole stupid romance aspect, a talking tiger, a cross- dressing Hayate, flat characters (I'm not talking about Hinagiku), and a plot that NEVER advances. Mushishi is perhaps the greatest storytelling I've seen from any anime. This is not for some epic overarching plot, but rather for a minimalist episodic approach that gives you new characters, new settings, new stories, and new mushi to deal with each episode. Other episodic anime may have the tendency to lose your interest partway through, but Mushishi is special in that each episode will leave you totally and completely satisfied.After an episode of Mushishi ends, there is no need to rush in to the next one to conclude the cliffhanger from the previous episode. I was really looking forward to this one. Code Geass had been a fun series and had left on perhaps the most annoying cliffhanger I've witnessed for any tv show. Imagine my dismay to find R2 practically destroy all my previously-held love for Code Geass.There are two aspects of the show that kept their quality, and perhaps even improve upon, from season to season, but sadly these are the two most insignificant categories: sound and animation.
