The language barrier isn't as bad as you may think; almost everyone speaks a little English. If you get the chance, without a doubt you should go. Although I would be lying if I said I didn't have any moments when things were "lost in translation." Still, that’s all just part of the experience of traveling overseas.
Excellent, I loved absorbing the culture of Kyoto and Nara. I even stayed a night at a Buddhist temple in Koyasan; it was quite the experience. I spent the other part of my trip exploring the culture (and sub-culture) of Tokyo, especially Akihabara. Nothing quite like Japanese game centers and maid cafes (moe-moe-kyun-kyun! :P). Although, that was over a year ago; it'll be awhile before I get back there again. Have you ever been?
