Full Metal Alchemist takes place in a world that seems similar to our own, but not as technologically advanced. Trains and steam powered engines are used a great deal, and the science of alchemy is far more prevalent than machines of our time. In alchemy, there is the rule of equivalent trade: you must give something of equal value in order to get something. And above all else, human transmutation is against all rules of alchemy, and does not work... or so it seems. Rumors have it that the Philosopher's Stone can give the alchemist the ability to even raise the dead, but it is long since sought after and never found. Enter Al and Edward, two young boys who attempted this heinous act once their beloved mother died. The act failed, causing Ed to lose his arm and leg, and Al to lose his body, trapping his soul in the body of a machine. Full Metal Alchemist follows Ed and Al as they search for the Philosopher's Stone to get their bodies and lives back... and that's just the beginning. Once upon a time, two brothers passed the happy days of their childhood by studying alchemy, which is governed by the equal transfer principle: an eye for an eye -- you can't get more than you give. But these brothers tried to defy that law, and a horrific accident resulted. Now, the older brother, Edward, is called the Full Metal Alchemist because of his metal limbs, and the younger, Alphonse, is a soul without a body, trapped within the confines of an automaton. Together they search for the power to restore themselves, to find the lives they lost so long ago...
Think you have what it takes to be one of Anime-Planet's site reviewers? Find out more!
My fav genres include sci fi and horror, but you'll find a lot of obscure reviews from me too, given I watch a ton to add to the database. My new reviews are written a lot better than my old ones, so when in doubt, sort by date! ^_^ Enjoy, and I welcome any and all feedback.
i'd say yh it's quite good :P i like Soul Eater just as much!
10/10 sums it all up perfect anime, The BEST in my oppinion :)
Check it out, I'm eagerly waiting for the dubs for the second season/remake Brotherhood which I have heard is awesome!
I largely agree with the review. But believe the score for story line should be lower. The story line for the second half of the series isn't as convincing and interesting in my opinion.
Having said that this is a great series. I might not give it a 10 but I would definitely give it a 9, so either way the point is this a series you really should watch.
I agree with the 10/10 here. One of the telling signs of a masterpiece is it's unique nature, and nothing in anime even closely resembles FMA. There's no way to predict what happens next because nothing is even remotely similar. Just take a look at the recommendations for FMA on this site. You'll notice an unusual variety of shows, but none that "runs away" with recs. 19 for D-Gray Man, 18 for Bleach, 16 for Chrono Crusade etc., ect. There are 14 pages of recs! Now take a look at another awesome series and you will notice that just about every anime has one or two series that most people would recommend for the other. That's because the similarities are so apparent. FMA has no reference.
"Briliant" is the perfect word for to sum up this series, and this review does it great justice. This series was good enough to hook me, a non-anime fan (and, at the time, often prejudicely anti-anime) from episode one - if I recall correctly I watched the whole thing over the course of only 2-3 days. It remains, to this day, the only English dub I can even watch, and is the sole reason I ever realized how awesome anime is. Although I thought Rurouni Kenshin (minus the worthless third season) had a greater impact on me, the attention to detail in every aspect of this series is amazing.
