Kare Kano was recommended to me by quite a few people as another good look at relationships, in a realistic way. Perhaps I expected too much, but I came into it thinking it would be a relationship series. I was wrong.
Yukino had it all. Brilliant, athletic, popular and pretty, she was the perfect school girl with many friends and admirers. But then one fateful day she met her match: a handsome young man named Arima. Now, not only is he beating her at her own game, she's becoming more and more dismayed to learn that she's developing her first real feelings of romance. Can Yukino maintain her model student appearance, or will love ruin all her plans?
Think you have what it takes to be one of Anime-Planet's site reviewers? Find out more!
My fav genres include sci fi and horror, but you'll find a lot of obscure reviews from me too, given I watch a ton to add to the database. My new reviews are written a lot better than my old ones, so when in doubt, sort by date! ^_^ Enjoy, and I welcome any and all feedback.
I would argue that the animation is what makes it unique - I like animation as excellent as Angel Beats! or even the CGI quality of Last Exile, but I loved the simple animation style of Kare Kano which I felt was appropriate to the tone. When things got serious, the animation reflected it, when things were funny or cheesy, so too went the animation.
I agree, though, that the flashbacks were unfortunate and numerous (and pointless), but I mentally chalk that up as a result of the underlying trouble with creating the series at all, as eventually made concrete with the abrupt demise of the show.
i couldn't make it past ep 11 .. :/ even though I really wanted to ... its so popular and I kept thinking there has to be more .. but no - not for me ... maybe i'll give a try again later in life
I want to watch this, of only because I read the whole manga and to this date, it's still one of my favorites ever. Of course, the manga never disappoints :)
I liked it mostly, it was a good series till they changed directors. About the half way mark the company didn't like how the comedy had taken over the ramance so they got a new director. He kept most of what was already made but anything that wasn't complete he trashed and redid. Which is where you get the 'cut-out' episode and all the black and while crap with a narrator. I would have liked it better if they just kept a constant style.
Reading the manga really brings out the relationships more, and in my opinion the manga was far better. You mentioned that eventually the flashbacks spanned over an episode, and that's because at that time Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) was having disputes over the direction of the anime, so they decided to have flashbacks until things were sorted out, which resulted in Anno leaving and the show being left to his protoge. That's the reason for the terribly long flashback in the middle and the change of pace after that.
I enjoyed the anime, but I must say again that the manga was just so much better. It's not always the case that I enjoy the manga more, but in this case the manga is just better.
