Prior to watching GANTZ, there were only two anime that I had seen that made me think "SHOCK VALUE": Elfen Lied, and Narutaru. While Narutaru excels in psychological shock value (episode 12, anyone?), Elfen Lied excels in "oh my god I can’t believe that body part just got ripped off of their body" shock value. GANTZ definitely rivals Elfen Lied with its grotesque nature, but is definitely stronger due to how nonstop the gore, violence and sexual undertones are displayed. While Elfen Lied only has sections dedicated to brutal violence, GANTZ is a nonstop assault on the senses with scenes of attempted rape, nudity, and an uncountable number of death scenes which often involve implosions, explosions, and involve a variety of subjects including aliens, animals, old people and children. Truly nothing is safe from the violence of GANTZ, and that definitely has to be the selling point of the series.
Much to the annoyance of Kei, he and his childhood friend Katou have died, having been torn apart by a train. But rather than finding themselves at the gates of heaven, the duo materialize in a room full of strangers and a giant black sphere known as GANTZ. As if dying once wasn’t bad enough, the occupants of the room are then forced to embark on dangerous missions to kill strange aliens; missions that very few return from. Now, Kei, Katou, and a well-endowed friend must fight for their freedom with an arsenal of guns, high powered suits, and a very low chance of survival.
Think you have what it takes to be one of Anime-Planet's site reviewers? Find out more!
My fav genres include sci fi and horror, but you'll find a lot of obscure reviews from me too, given I watch a ton to add to the database. My new reviews are written a lot better than my old ones, so when in doubt, sort by date! ^_^ Enjoy, and I welcome any and all feedback.
teasing plays a big role in this anime (well thats just one reason to add to the multiple others). Your going to be pulled hard to different characters making it seem like this person or that one is going to play a key role in it by giving great importance to that character, making it seem like thier going to be sticking around for awhile and even one of the canidats for a happy ending, then out of nowhere they dying a grusome death.
Ohhhh i absolutely agree with you!!I really loved this anime and i enjoyed it till the end!!The characters, the plot, the music, everything is making this anime worth-watching!
I really enjoyed watching the anime, it was a nice switch from the more humdrum preachy anime that I've gotten used to. It had a message but didn't stand on it until the end and was very well done when it finally did get around to it. The story on it's own is a bit of a mind fuck, which I kinda of like it reminded me a lot of Chaos Head in that way. I probably would have watched the entire anime in under 24 hours had I not had to be careful of who was around when I watched it and the whole work thing. I thought it was very well written and peered pretty deeply into how people actually behave, we crave sex and violence as entertainment and it gave it to us, then hit us with a message at the end that was totally against what the whole anime had been about, I think that helped get the message across a little more clearly as well.
Good review I thought you rated it a little high considering the middle pacing was horribly bad. The story, and ideas set into motion were well executed though. Also gantz manga puts the anime to shame so if you loved the anime ur gonna love the manga even more.
story 8.5/10!? :/ sothis i really trusted your opinion.....until now XD
for me this anime story is completely non-sense and ill-minded, you can't even call it a psycological anime....
