AirCommodore AirCommodore says...

Another episodic CLAMP manga that blends supernatural themes with an urban setting. Both are a bit moody, have easily-shipped male leads, and balance lots of dark/depressing stories with a sprinkling of silly humor. Additionally, the types of morals in each are often extremely similar.

NonNonBa

NonNonBa

Autobiographical tale in which Mizuki narrates the memories of his childhood in the decade of 1930, in Sakaiminato, a small coastal town at the southwest Japan. With nostalgia and tenderness, the mangaka narrates his first years of life within a modest family, the fights with his friends, the school and his first loves. The title character of the book, NonNonBa, is an old mystical and superstitious woman by which Shigeru discovers the world of yokai, supernatural beings and grotesque bestiary of medieval Japanese.

Both of these manga are about a mostly ordinary boy/teen learning about youkai and other supernatural entities with the help of an older female mentor who is extremely knowledgeable about such things. Nonnonba has a historical setting, and is like a realistic, more down-to-earth version of xxxHolic, which has a bunch of fantasy elements. However, both have very similar set-ups and story progression, so may appeal to the same audience.

Both of these series have a very similar "dark" feel. They are about normal humans who are given a taste of the paranormal, and the resulting panic can only be described as creepy horror. "1/2" could work perfectly as one of the episodic stories in xxxHolic.

Both stories deal with wishes and the consequences that accompany their granting.  Additionally, the master granting the wishes takes on an apprentice who is influenced by the experiences.

Both protagonists get thrust into the world of ayakashi in order to repay a debt of service. Both well written, alternating periods of seriousness with comedy.
