The Story of Saiunkoku

The Story of Saiunkoku

In an ancient and mythological land called Saiunkoku, the people have begun to recover from a period of war and famine; thus, when an official from the imperial court offers the impoverished and beautiful Shuurei more money than she could ever dream of in return for a favor, she jumps at the chance. What she doesn’t count on, however, is being asked to become a concubine to the recluse Emperor and help him transform into a better leader. What’s more, the Emperor shows little intelligence, seems to have no interest in ruling, and is rumored to prefer men. One thing’s for certain: Shuurei has her work cut out for her!

Both manga start in a similar way, with the poor heroine finding out about a high paying job at the palace where she has to be the emperor's temporary consort/bride. While Ookami-heika no Hanayome is focused on romance Saiunkoku Monogatari puts its emphasis on politics but still maintains a dose of romance.

I began reading Zettai right after finishing chapter 45 of Ookami-heika and I immediately noticed some similarities.

Similarities

  • A guy and girl are pretending to be in a relationship in order to appease other people.
  • This relationship blossoms into love and the man recognizes his love first.
  • The girl is in denial that she is in love and reacts to the man by running away or lashing out in anger.
  • The girl is strong but still cries occasionally.
  • The two lovers come from completely different worlds (A king and a commoner in Ookami and a Northern prince and a Desert princess in Zettai).
  • Other people try to tear the relationship apart.
  • The guy often teases the girl.

The romance in both stories is very sweet.

In Zettai, Euda and Johan/Johanne (depending on the translation) have a more antagonisitic relationship. They originally hate one another for the war their kingdoms were fighting but they get together to save their people.

In Ookami Yuurin/Yuulin (again, translation) and Reishou get together so officials will stop offering their daughters to marry Reishou. Yuurin is being paid to be the king's consort and their relationship begins with friendship but they both begin to recognise their love for each other. Both of them doesn't believe the other loves them so they are resigned to the fact that they will part ways one day.

After that long-winded summary, if you liked one you'll like the other.
