Hyouka

Hyouka

"If I don't have to do it, I won't. If I do have to do it, make it quick," is the basic principle by which energy conservationist Houtarou Oreki lives. But after his sister convinces him to join the Classics Club, Houtarou's life is turned upside down when he meets Chitanda, a perpetually-inquisitive girl who challenges the boy's easygoing existence. Intrigued by the slightest hint of a mystery afoot, Chitanda doesn't hesitate to pester the reluctant yet highly analytical Houtarou into satisfying her curiosity at every turn, no matter how small the problem. Alongside fellow members Satoshi and Ibara, the group tackles cases ranging from a self-locking classroom door, a strangely-popular library book, and even the shadowy history of the very club to which they belong!

Reasons you might like Hyouka...

Zaig Zaig says...

An overly energetic girl approaches a guy with a personality completely opposite hers, requesting his unwilling assistance and analytical ability to solve problems inside the school. Hidden deep beneath the layers of mystery lies a slow developing romance between them. A fan of one can certainly find the reasons to enjoy the other.

abunai abunai says...

Both Hyouka and Iris Zero build up their story about essentially human emotional dramas, the interplay of personal feelings. In both stories, there is a standoffish male lead with a gift for seeing into people's deepest motivations and breaking through layers of mystery -- and his burgeoning love interest, a sweet and positive girl who helps motivate him to act on others' behalf. If you like one of them, you'll surely like the other.

Little Busters!

Little Busters!

Riki, Rin, Masato, Kengo, and Kyousuke are five high school students who have been friends since they were young children. With their carefree school days rapidly coming to an end, the gang wants to do something fun and crazy like they used to and in the heat of the moment decide to form a baseball team. Calling themselves the “Little Busters” the friends begin to recruit new members and start practicing. But even though they’ve managed to secure two new teammates, with everyone getting distracted by a multitude of other things from sorting out cleaning duty for the boy’s dorm to helping a girl find a roommate, will the Little Busters ever be able to find enough members, or for that matter even have time to practice?

These manga deal with friendship and helping people with their personal problems, though the protagonist in Iris Zero assists somewhat unwillingly and the lead in Little Busters! has a selfless personality. There's also really funny moments in the stories to keep your attention.

Hibiki's Magic

Her only real skill seems to be making a pot of delicious tea...or is it? This heartwarming fantasy story will have you believing in Hibiki's magic!

Gunther Gunther says...

Both Iris Zero and Hibiki no Mahou are relatively slow-paced, sweet stories about how the supernatural affects people's lives on an emotional level (rather than using magic as an excuse for elaborate fights). Using magical powers as more of a symbol than anything else, they're both ultimately about frienship, love, and human relationships. There's also the fact that the art styles are pretty similar, and Koyuki and Hibiki have similar personalities.

Rewrite: Side-B

Rewrite: Side-B

Rewrite is set in the fictional city Kazamatsuri where treeplanting and afforestation have caused the city to become overgrown with trees and flowers in much the same way that other cities are filled by buildings. However, while most of the city appears to be rural, there are many traditional city elements as well. While set in a modern setting, the city also gives off a strange sense of nostalgia. The basis of the story is set in a high school setting.

While not very alike, it's impossible to not notice the supernatural elements that are secondary to the story, coupled with the dramatic - and at times hilarious! - dialogue that are in each. However, they're somewhat opposites: the protagonist in Iris Zero is the sole person to not have a power in a world where everyone is recently born with one, and in Rewrite the protagonist seems to be one of the few who actually do have a power.

If you enjoyed how dramatic supernatural elements helped a group of friends form a close bond, and maybe were amused by the steady jokes made along the way with an extra side of romance, I highly suggest reading the other. The main heroines also look strikingly similar in their uncolored drawings.

Mou I-yo

Mou I-yo

Kataoka and Sato have been friends since they were little. Kataoka has much better hearing than the average human, and he says Sato's voice is the most noisy of all. He has grown into a teenager able to hear everything from far around him--the good and bad. Now that the two of them are teenagers, Sato is affiliated with the school newspaper club, and Kataoka has mostly isolated himself. When the newspaper club decides to look into the truth behind some 'supernatural' rumors, Sato manages to convince Kataoka to lend the club his abilities.

In both of these manga, the protagonist is a loner due to his ability/lack thereof, and is dragged around by an outgoing girl with a personality opposite him. As the two solve mysteries together in their school, mostly thanks to the guy, it becomes increasingly obvious there's more to their relationship than being simply friends - romance plays a small part in the story. They're also dialogue-heavy.
