Somehow, the main character in these bildingsromans manage to be pathetic and lovable at the same time. Similarly, I'm never sure if reading these manga makes me happy or incredibly depressed. I do know, however, that if you liked the adolescent drama of one, you will definitely like the other.

Bokura no Hentai

Bokura no Hentai

Three boys in junior-high who cross-dress because of differing reasons meet each other through a cross-dressing community website, and decide to meet up in real life. "Parou" started cross-dressing because he wanted to attract a heterosexual boy he liked. "Marika" is transgender and identifies as female. Lastly, "Yui" is an antagonistic boy who adopted the persona of his older sister after her death. In contrast to Parou and Marika, Yui is sorely disappointed at the meeting.

Both manga are about school children and the hardships - either caused by situations at home or at school - that one can go through while in adolescence. Both have very dark undertones and characters that can be pretty multi-faceted.

Mars

Mars

Kiro Aso is an astounding artist who spends her days cooped at home or in art club room, avoiding all contact with others – especially boys. Rei Kashino is a popular motorcycle enthusiast who seems to have it all: looks, personality, and an endless supply of hot babes throwing themselves at him. When the two cross paths one day by chance, no one could have suspected how close these polar opposites would grow to be, or just how many obstacles their love would have to overcome...

Both manga explore the darker side of humans. They both have the same impact: leaving you uncomfortable as they expose the monsters in humans.

Since the day you were born all you could see was misfortune, a world in pitch black. Day by day you desperately tried to find that light that could change your life. But what if, no matter how hard you try, that light never comes? What would you do? It sounds depressing, I know. These two titles show you with an original narration, story and art style, different realities that have something in common: darkness, depression, loneliness.

Both titles are seinen that show you, in their own unique ways, the difficulties, the struggle in the japanese society and especially how hard and traumatizing can be adolescence for some teenagers. So many topics: war, religions, politics.. but even something that's not in everyday's news like abortion, bullism, suicide, drug usage and alcoholism. These are very difficult themes that cannot be taken lightly and need a great writer and great mind to analyze and present with the right dose irony. Keep in mind, Akira is 25 years older than Oyasumi Punpun so the points of view can be a little different, but both stories are equally great. Enjoy.
