Ouran High School is a prestigious private academy where money and status count for everything. Haruhi Fujioka is a scholarship student at the elite school, and is appalled by the lazy attitude of the rich and powerful students towards their studies. The Host Club is a clear example of this: a group of six attractive and wealthy boys spend their time entertaining the female pupils for a profit. When Haruhi accidentally breaks a ¥8,000,000 vase belonging to the club, they force her to work off her debt as one of the club's members; and to do so, she must masquerade as a boy! Both are about a kind girl hanging out with a harem of bishounen (pretty boys) and helping them fight their personal demons (psychological, not supernatural).  Ouran is the more comedic of the two, but both are quite funny at times, while touching and even sad at others.

wolfangel87 wolfangel87 says...

Both Fruits Basket and Ouran are about a reverse harem, making the girl the center of attention in a group full of guys. The series both also deal with morality issues that are expressed throughout the show with a great deal of humor thrown into the mix.

americanotaku12 americanotaku12 says...

If you loved Fruits Basket, you will also love Ouran High School Host Club. I won't reveal too much but it's basically areverse harem in a super rich school where this smart girl who looks like a boy, Haruhi Fujioka, manages to have to pay back these rich kids by pretending to be a boy in their host club. It's funny with gorgeous boys who each fit into a specific category that a girl would find attractive in a man. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

Yeah I totally agree with this recommendation. Both series are quite similar in many different ways.

There's something about the both of them that just makes them go hand in hand. Maybe it's the harem or the slice of life aspect. I'm not quite sure, but they really are worth the watch if you like either one of them.

Pickletom10 Pickletom10 says...

These mangas both are filled with fun, laughter, adventure, and romance. The main characters, Tohru and Haruhi, have so much in common. They both hang out around boys, have a sad backstory, and very VERY cute.

Vejhed Vejhed says...

Although Absolute Boyfriend is a bit more on the 'mature' side of things, it has a few similarities to Fruits Basket. For one thing, both are reverse harem and they each include a female lead sworn to secrecy while trying to pay off some debt or other. Though they don't have the same tone, mood, setting, or similar plots, there is a chance that if you liked one you'll like the other.

LittleChomp LittleChomp says...

In both Absolute Boyfriend and Fruits Basket, there are a few guys after one girl, and she likes them both! A relationship with any of the guys would be complicated, and there's someone who doesn't want it to happen. If you like romance with drama and guys who are definitely out of the ordinary, you'll probably enjoy these two. ;)

wolfangel87 wolfangel87 says...

The female characters in Fruits Basket and Absolute boyfriend have the same type of personalities, and lucky them, they get to be surrounded by two hot guys vying for their attention.  Although Absolute Boyfriend does have a more mature aspect to it, Fruits Basket also has its own share of misfortune suffered by each character.  The plot lines are greatly developed in both series and make the reader want to learn more even after the stories conclude.

amyholic amyholic says...

Both have the pretty average looking female lead, love triangles, a major secret, and good looking male characters. The only difference is that Absolute Boyfriend is somewhat tragic (not giving any spoliers, just want to prepare readers for a bit of heart ache).

zerolight zerolight says...

Well I haven't read all of absolute boyfriend yet but both fruits basket and absolute boyfriend have those 2 guys. She has a choice and will either decide one or the other also AB is very funny.

Kamisama Kiss

Kamisama Kiss

Nanami used to live in a ramshackle apartment with her father - a man who spent half his time gambling and the other half hiding from debt collectors - until one day the scoundrel ran away, leaving his daughter hungry and homeless. That is, until she meets a mysterious stranger in the park who deems her the new goddess of a local shrine! Unfortunately, Nanami’s new home is occupied by Tomoe, a fox familiar who objects to the presence of a mere mortal and immediately begins to bicker with the girl. If she can manage to form a contract with the troublesome man, he’ll be obligated to accept and help her perform her duties. But there’s a catch: Nanami has to kiss him first, and who’d want to lock lips with that awful guy?!

Honestly, I'm quite shocked that no one else has reccommended these two. Kamisama Kiss feels like the natural successor to Fruits Basket. Tonally, they both have a nice blend of light and dark moments, as well as a deeper development with the main character.

Without spoiling too much, if the initial premise of a young woman without a home gets thrown into a whimsical supernatural world with rather eccentric and beautiful characters, there is a good chance you will like both of these manga.

DeathWish05 DeathWish05 says...

If you'd like one of them the other is definatly siuted for you. They both have a "godly theme"/they both includes gods. They're both incredably similar, but in my opinion, Fruit Basket is more... intersesting.

PonPonPlum PonPonPlum says...

Both of them have a female protagonist with a warm, loving heart who wants to help others. I think if you like Tohru as a protagonist in Furuba then you will like Nanami in Kamisama, and vice versa. Both have gods and spirits/mythology. Both have guys who are distant/cold but mellow out over time. Both have comedic moments. Both have really nice love stories which develop over the course and the characters are changed by their love.

Same theme and same lovely story.

Recoment both series and the anime

These two manga's have got a similar art style (probably due to the fact they are from the same author). The main characters in each of have very similar personality traits and are in similar circumstances. These main female leads also are both surrounded by a strong male cast, of which similarities can be seen as similar between the two manga's, e.g. why they are in the household they live in, romance to a mysterious man and others.

thePrancingCupcake thePrancingCupcake says...

If you like this Fruits Basket, you will definatly enjoy Hoshi wa Utau. The art is the same (seeing as its the same person) but I didnt have any problems keeping the stories seperate. Sometimes, authors tend to have overlapping storeis or characters across their mangas, so I was a little concerned when I first started.

I love Fruits Basket. Its my all-time, non-replaceable favorite manga. Its well written, well drawn, and inspirational (to me at leat).

Both mangas have characters you fall in love with, plots that keep you interested, and themes-upon themes-upon themes.

jypsel jypsel says...

These mangas are both written by the same mangaka and you can tell. The styles are very similar and the struggles that each character goes through are similar as well. The heroines have the same naive appeal and the main love interests are both haunted, unfortunate boys.

Erica73 Erica73 says...

They both have a similar concept of people shapeshifting into animals and keeping it a secret from the general population. A girl discovers their secret and the story goes on from there. However, Fruits Baskets is a much more developed manga. The plot is planned and paced more efficiently and the overall storyline is much better. Watashi no Ookami-kun was a bit rushed, and the presentation of the plot wasn't very appealing, but the overall idea of the story was good.

XxShenQingQiuxX XxShenQingQiuxX says...

This manga is really similar to Fruits basket, however, this is shorter, in terms of chapters. There's also the fact that there are fewer animals that can transform into a human, compared to Fruits baskets, and that the transformation in this one isn't implemented as a curse as in Fruits Basket. Their both similar because of the interspecies relationships they have. Especially regarding both the MC's in both the mangas. OMG!, I loved both the manga!! If you read Fruits basket, I definitely recommend you to read this one! Vice-Versa!

While Fruits Basket is the more lighthearted of the two, both of these titles involve a girl who is now living with supernatural-type beings. Romance and drama is apparant in both, plus a hefty dose of shoujo. If you liked one, try out the other.

Kari5 Kari5 says...

Both of these are comedy shoujo manga about a teenage girl who lives with suspernatural beings. The main female characters are also very similar; they're both poor but independent girls who work hard so they don't have to depend on others. If you enjoyed one I'm sure you'll enjoy the other.

Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You

Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You

Sawako Kuronuma is just like any other high school girl who wants to make friends and be useful. The only problem is she bears a worrying resemblance to Sadako from 'The Ring!' Because of her reputation, people are not only terrified of her, but small dogs even bark in fear at her presence; in fact, the only person in school who will talk to her is the lively class hottie, Kazehaya. As the pair spends more time together, Kazehaya slowly begins to bring Sawako out of her shell and soon their feelings for each other develop further. Though with her crippling insecurities, lack of social skills, and a series of cruel rumors and misunderstandings, it seems that Sawako's dream of a normal life won’t be quite so easy to obtain.

In both of theses series, there is a very sweet and innocent female protaganist who really brings a refreshing look on relationships and what it means to kind.  This innocent kindness really sucks the reader into the character, which creates a very addictive story.

wolfangel87 wolfangel87 says...

The lifestyles both heroines lead in Kimi ni Todoke and Fruits Basket are similar.  They are trying to find a way to successfully fit in with the people around them.  For Tohru (Fruits Basket), she already has the winning personality and can easily make friends but she has to put that to good use to help the people around her.  Sadako (Kimi ni Todoke) desperatly wants to make friends with the people around her but everyone things she is scary, she goes out of her way to try and help everyone to gain their friendship.  Both girls are naive and beyond nice.

Both plots seem to take on interesting variations as the manga progress; they have unforgettable characters and a flair for comedic moments. Fruits Basket is a more ‘cute' type of manga whereas Chobits has a little more of an ecchi quality about it, but they are both very endearing.

They're both very cutesy. Fruits Basket seems to have more meaning, but they both kind of have underlying importance.

wolfangel87 wolfangel87 says...

The characters in Fruits Basket and Fushigi Yugi, with their different personalities, are unforgettable. Fruits Basket deals with the twelve animals of the zodiac and the curse placed upon them, while Fushigi Yugi is a story of a priestess who is trying to find the seven Celestial warriors to unlock the power to save Konan. The heroines of the series, Tohru (Fruits Basket) and Miaka (Fushigi Yugi), both have similar personalities to one another. Both series also have surprisingly sad moments and a dramatic plot line that explores the characters' pasts.

LittleChomp LittleChomp says...

A girl accidentally becomes a part of something magical and decides to help those who are trapped in a world that she barely understands. There's love, danger, and curiosity about new celestial warriors or members of the zodiac. Granted, the structure of these manga may be different (a metaphorical new world vs. a literal one), but the cores are quite similar!

11 year-old Sana Kurata is a positive, upbeat child actress with a rather odd life. She was adopted as a baby by an eccentric novelist who wears a live squirrel in her hair, her acting career is managed by a (former) homeless man who Sana unabashedly claims is her "pimp", and at school her teacher has completely lost control of her classroom due to a group of blackmailing bullies led by "demon child" Akito Hayama. With her whole class in danger of failing, Sana decides she's had enough of Akito's nonsense at school and challenges him. The whole school is ready for a showdown as these strong personalities collide, but as the two very different kids learn more about each other, something unexpected happens. Is it possible for sworn enemies to become fast friends?

The story of an optimistic young school girl who tries to help everyone around her while dealing with her own difficulties in life. That's the story of both Fruits Basket and Kodocha, and both series are executed very well. The main female leads are extremely easy to like and their respective hot-headed love interests are a good match. Shoujo fans should enjoy them both.
