In both mangas main character is weak and cowardly high school student, who is suddenly given mysterious powers, and thrown into a deadly game. He have to face other power users, and fight them. The cost of losing is exremely high (death in Mirai Nikki, losing a random body part in Deadman Wonderland), so our main hero have to quickly loose his naivety.

In both mangas there is a heroine, who is very close to main character.I won't spoil exactly what's so special about her (though it's revealed soon) but I can say this much - Yuno from Mirai Nikki is very similar to Shiro from Deadman wonderland in many ways.

Lastly both mangas have very dark theme. There is a large amount of violence and gore. Most of the characters featured in both mangas are total psychos.

Omurqi Omurqi says...

Different characters and setting, same concept. Deadman Wonderland and Future Diary are two manga about a life-threatening game, in which every move has its concequences. Enjoyed the constant tension and combination of a male lead with a less-than-normal girl by his side? Then give the other a shot!

DreamMonster DreamMonster says...

While reading Deadman Wonderland I kept on getting memory flashes from Future Diary.  It wasn't because the stories were so similar but it was  because that some of the characters were.  They were both good reads and if I remember correctly then Future Diary had almost exactly the same amount of bloody scenes in it as Deadman Wonderland had plus they were both very interesting.

BBM1 BBM1 says...

Both protagonists give the same feeling in theire "growing process" of not knowing what the hell is going on to accepting the totaly crazy and disturbing enviroment they have gotten into and getting to deal with it.

FullmetalDragon FullmetalDragon says...

Both Future Diary and Deadman Wonderland have lots of gore, similar characters and a supernatural element. They're both great series as well.

Felt both mangas had very similar moods to them. Especially the main characters, got really similar vibes from them.

both are similar in the way that both are about super natural criminals who are locked up in a secret area no one is supposed to know about

batman900 batman900 says...

both are very similar glances into an isolated, hidden prison with super-powered prisoners.  Both have a relatively novice character thrown in with more knowledgable people and having to learn to adopt to using his power.

KingArthur13th KingArthur13th says...

Both manga are prison survival stories. Prisoners with dangerous supernatrual powers are locked away in a secret area that the public is completely unaware of. Here, the prisoners use their powers to survive this incredibly hostile dog eat dog world.

sothis sothis says...

Saying that Deadman is a good rec with Area D is the captain obvious recommendation of the year, but it's a good one. Both involve prisoners with superpowers trying to survive, clans, etc. Both also suffer from some of the same pitfalls, such as starting out interesting and quickly de-evolving into genericness with shounen-esque, boring battles drawn out between multiple chapters. Deadman is definitely the more explicit between the two as well, but there's really no reason you'd dislike one if you liked the other.

Thrawn Thrawn says...

In a world where superpowered people are treated like crap, anybody with kickass powers (Powers in general, even if you get shafted in the lottery of powers) gets their asses hauled to a super prison where gangs form, hits are called and all kinds of prison stuff goes down (Like murder, possible shanking and criminal stuff). In Deadman Wonderland's case, it's also normal criminal scum instead of superpowered scum.

Action, superpowered badasses fighting other superpowered badasses with it's fair share of blood and violence and a dash of comedy in it's downtime before it whiplashes into more violence. If you want superpowered action with some memorable characters and a pretty good story, you can't go wrong with these two.

FullmetalDragon FullmetalDragon says...

Both Area D and Deadman Wonderland are about people with superpowers being isolated. They're both pretty dark, although Deadman Wonderland moreso.

Elfen Lied

Elfen Lied

In the near future, some girls are born mutated. Known as Diclonius, this new species is believed to have been chosen by God to wipe out mankind. Unlike regular humans, Diclonius have two horns on their head and ‘vectors' - invisible ‘hands.' Contained within a research facility unknown to the world, the Diclonius are experimented upon mercilessly; many die or develop a hate for mankind. One such creature, Lucy, is said to be the first of the Diclonius. She escapes from the facility, but while fleeing she takes a bullet to the head and is seemingly killed. However, it seems Lucy isn't quite dead yet; she's instead developed an alternate personality called Nyuu. She's washed up on a shore where two people, Kouta and Yuka, find her and bring her home, unaware that such a monster still lurks within Nyuu.

Both Deadman Wonderland and Elfen Lied have super natural themes of super humans with advantage to kill. Also, they both contain strong violence and a very dark theme with and few comedy sides to it.

It also contains a split personality character, one being sweet and 'dopey' the other being a malicous killer.

I would strongly recomend this to the male fans of Elfen Lied, but of course girls would love it to.

Lizardbitch Lizardbitch says...

Extremely gorey, people with strange powers, people with tortured backgrounds, crazy battles, and a strange story.

Yakoz Yakoz says...

In both stories we have a boy and a mysterious girl with inhuman powers who seem to have something in common. Explicit violence, a little bit of drama and supernatural elements characterize both mangas.

The main difference is the setting: Deadman Wonderland, name of the theme park / prison, has high stakes games elements; Elfen Lied shows how the protagonists go deeper into their relationship by living under the same roof.

Gantz

Gantz

Kei, a cynical and arrogant high school student, has minimal regard for others; so it's much to his surprise that when he's asked by his elementary school friend Kato to save a drunken bum laying on the subway tracks, he actually complies. However, no good deed goes unpunished, and they are swiftly decapitated by the oncoming train. Kei and Kato awaken in a nondescript room occupied by a black sphere and a variety of other people, and thus begins Gantz's game. In it, the players must face off against aliens in battles where death is inevitable and rewards are minimal. Unfortunately for them, this is just the beginning of their nightmare - at least, for those who manage to survive...

As the blood splatters and the opponents get tougher, survival becomes increasingly harder.  Gants and DW are centered around a group of people who desperately fight for their freedom.  They must endure trials placed on them that, to a normal human, would be physically and emotionally impossible. Ganta and Kei started off as total wimps.  They would of never been able to fathom the killing they would soon do.  As time passed and the strain grew, our young protagonists matured into leaders.  They become what everyone follows for survival of the never-ending hell.  Massive gore, development in about everything and just a unique story, you can't go wrong in choosing one of these.

dkjiji dkjiji says...

Gantz and Deadman Wonderland are both extremely violent manga with plenty of gore. The main character in each is a teenager forced into a life or death situation. Both have a large cast of characters with different abilities and fighting styles which keeps the action fresh and interesting.

Lizardbitch Lizardbitch says...

It's full of gore, a strange background for the characters, people put into an odd arena with weird powers and creatures, and it's just plain crazy.

Battle Royale

Battle Royale

Reality TV has hit a new and disturbingly graphic low with ‘The Program,' a television series in which a purposely chosen ninth-grade class is forced to fight to the death on a remote island. With only minimal survival gear and a random weapon, each student must survive and kill their friends until only one winner remains; if the group refuses to play, all of its members are killed by the electronic collars around their necks. Girlfriends and boyfriends betray each other, friends are brutally slain by their closest companions and alliances are made and broken. On screen for the world to see, only the strongest will survive this horrific, sadistic game...

Battle Royale and Deadman Wonderland are all about violence and insanity with moments of nihilism strewn in for good measure. In both manga society is warped and the lethal game aspect brings them closer. DW has a sci-fi element while BR brings the violent content to a whole new level of gore; recommended for those who are not squeamish.

Delusional Boy

Delusional Boy

That ‘day, where the mass murder of the entire student body took place,’ (The starting day) Gi Haru kills his girlfriend Kang Lee Ha with his own hands, is betrayed by his one and only friend Kang Yul, and ends up losing both his eyes. Afterwards, he was detained in a mental institute as the culprit of massacring the entire student body, but after receiving help from the capable group of ‘panthers’ he begins to chase after Kang Yul and begins the road of vengeance.

Both main characters have the same beginning that consists of the massacre of their classroom and hem being sent to some sort of prison/mental asylum. Both of them want to avenge their friends (though in my opinion they're  just typical main character who beat the crap outta the villain) and start their insane,dark,horror-filled life.

Both of these manga give off the same kind of feeling. A protagonist who gets dragged into a world they dont want to be in. Both manga also show you people's reasoning to do things and really make you question morality. You get to understand why people do things and sympathise with both sides

Yakoz Yakoz says...

Knowing that Eureka Seven and Deadman Wonderland are made by the same two authors and artists, you can see how they decided to opt for two different routes while keeping the same ease, the same idea:

Eureka Seven is a shounen with supernatural, action and mecha elements, a childish protagonist and a mysterious girl.

Deadman Wonderland is a shounen with supernatural elements, crazy superpowers, gorey scenes and high stakes games in a play or die situation.

Although the projects are not related whatsoever, if I had to define these two titles I would say Eureka Seven is the "birth" and Deadman Wonderland is the "growth".

You'll find similarities in the relationship, bond, destiny Renton - Eureka ( in E7) and Genta - Shiro (in DW) share, but in a different background and setting.
