Thrawn Thrawn says...

Taken out of normality, the two main characters of these series will be pushed to the limits of the human psyche and morality as they confront the unknown and an unrelenting darkness. Tense and suspenseful, each single volume work is a quick read and bound to keep your attention until the final page.

Yakoz92 Yakoz92 says...

In both manga the protagonist and the reader are forced to endure, in an active and passive way, a painful situation, a claustrophobic feeling, a mentally deteriorating experience that will influence the story and main character in primis. They're both 1-volume horror manga, so a fairly fast read.

White Rain

White Rain

A girl suddenly finds herself in a room with an identical copy of herself; writing on their foreheads identifies them as 328 and 329. Although there's water, there's no food and all of the furniture is sized for an adult. A raft sits atop a freezing river, but it can only hold one of them. Meanwhile, a buzzing, huge insect tells a chilling tale: only one of them can take the raft to the next world, and must kill the other to do so...

While White Rain is more fantastical, both are grim tales of two people put together in a strange place for nefarious reasons. I had a very similar feeling reading both, so check out one if you liked the other.

Manhole

Manhole

A gruesome, disfigured, naked man climbs from beneath a manhole and wanders the streets briefly before vomiting blood and falling down dead. Detectives Nao and Ken are sent to investigate the case, but what they uncover is far more horrifying than they could possibly have imagined. What could have been a simple parasitic infection could have widespread, deadly consequences, and it's up to the duo to discover the truth behind these events...

AirCommodore AirCommodore says...

This is kind of a gut feeling recommendation, but Alive! and Manhole have a similar atmosphere (gory, gritty, and dark), a few similarities in plot (what to do with convicts), and will probably appeal to the same audience.

Blue Heaven

Blue Heaven

The Blue Heaven is the greatest of luxury cruise liners, catering to its guests’ every need. While passing by a derelict fishing ship during a voyage, the Blue Heaven’s crew investigates, finding only two barely-alive survivors alongside a scene of murderous carnage. They are brought on board and treated, but one of the two men escapes custody, loses himself amongst the numerous passengers, and is confirmed the killer by the second survivor. With the ship thrown into chaos behind the scenes, can security forces find the madman before events escalate?

Thrawn Thrawn says...

Violence and the ability to kill in the form of criminals or the deranged, either one deals in death, blood and sacrifice. Both are grim and hardly light reads, but are good to tide your thirst for thrillers, even if they aren't blood-a-minute gorefests.

Domu: A Child's Dream

Domu: A Child's Dream

Residents of a sprawling apartment complex are gripped by terror as dozens of tenants commit suicide over several months. The police are baffled. What no one realizes is that a malicious psychic force has gained control over the complex, and it isn't until a young girl moves in with her family, a girl gifted with her own psychic arsenal, that the source of the chaos is finally revealed...

Yakoz92 Yakoz92 says...

We can classify both as horror manga. The important element that brings them together is the psychic powers that some of the characters have and are able to use to torture, kill, destroy.
