This is a great comedy chapter, although I have a feeling we'll have a very serious storyline again soon to create contrast.

The un-exciting thing is that the next two or three chapters is probably just going to be them orientating themselves, and commenting on the various abnormalities.
That is fine and all, but I reeeeeally want to see some new people(or old ones).
Though the maelstrom and the whales were probably necessary in that Oda doesn't want the strawhats to end up facing Smoker immediately.

And it's supposed to be a very harsh sea, too. You definitely have to set the atmosphere for that very well if you don't want all the previous New World hype to become pretentious/bullshitty. And he's getting it totally right for now. =)

The chapter was funny and the next one's probably gonna be funny and chaotic with them reaching the island at the end. Luffy vs Smoker will be epic, but it'll probably be a while off.

Anyone noticed how Oda has become a lot more "comfortable" with death?
Earlier in the series, almost no one died except for in flashbacks, or it was implied that faceless grunts died here or there.
Then there was a whole lot more dying, and the marineford arc pushed it into overdrive.

Well, to be fair, only two characters ''with name'' died in the Marineford arc, at least that we know of. If you mean deaths of ''nameless'' people then the same could definitely be applied to Arabasta, for example. You could see people falling to the ground constantly during the endless frey at Alubarna.

Yet not a lot of corpses left in the streets as the battle came closer to the center.
And then there's Pell, for seemingly no reason, surviving the bomb that could level the entire city when he himself was holding it.
At least at Marineford there's put emphasis on the "faceless grunts" dying, including mentioning that these people have friends and family to return to, something rarely mentioned in "mass grunt killing" scenes.
