Well, both Teletha and Teresa would be transliterated as te re sa, so that doesn't mean anything. But Gonzo's own site has it in English as Teresa, so I guess we go with that.

even without that, I have some difficulty trying to understand how someone can think it's Teletha...

I mean, yes, the japanese have always had problems with pronouncing western names... **remembers seeing the name "Aakaad" in a fansub of Hellsing** ... but all things being equal, the most likely one is usually the right one, isn't it?

Person A: "we've got a gaijin-girl with western upbringing ... her name is either Teletha or Teresa, which do you guys think it is?"
Persons B-F: "Teletha!"
Person G: "what? I always thought it was Teresa.. as it works really well with her last name, Testarossa"
Persons A through F: "Are you insane?!"

... *sighs* no, still don't get it.

*sigh* If you watch FMP on DVD they state her full name is Teletha, but her nickname is Tessa (or maybe it's FMP?F)

In FMP?F ep 11 (non special) around 11:15 seconds she states and PRONOUNCES her name is "Teletha Testarossa" but to call her "Tessa" if you listen you will HEAR her say "Te-le-tha" and "tess-a"

That is her name in the novels as well "Te-le-tha" but everyone just calls her "tess-a"

what does the subtitles say?

... the japanese are horrible at pronouncing western names, so that's really not anything to go on.

I have the fansubs and I will send you the A-kingdom version, and you can HEAR it clearly around 11:14 :)

The subs say "My name is Teletha Testarossa" "But please call me Tessa"

And she says TELETHA and then TESSA.

I got the fansubs as well... and most of the R1s... but, it's still *subtitled* as Teresa ... and mentioned as *Teresa* in the Offical Gonzo website cast-list.
regardless of how she *pronounces* it.
I yet again mention that japanese cannot pronouncing western names worth a damn.

hehehe... I'd love to hear your take on the character "Dorcas" in Kyou Kara Maou... they pronounce it dorukusukasu and no, I'm not kidding.

ooo...

Full metal Panic! ep10 R1 DVDs, When Tessa introduces her self to Chidori, she says "I'm Teletha Testarossa" "My friends call me Tesssa"

AGAIN she says "Te-le-tha" and then afterwards "Tess-a" This is the japanese audio track.

And that's what is stated in the subtitles.

:)

Any other questions?

Both Teletha and Teresa are NOT real names by any babyname finder I have found BTW. So who knows what they're *really* trying to say.

It sounds like "Teletha" more than "teresa" unless if they're trying to do "Teressa" as in mother Teressa...but then they would be totally off and it sounds NOTHING like teressa :)

You also have to remember the Japanese can't spell worth anything :) they use alot of engrish.

I'm about to become uncivilized and call you an idiot so let's bury this part of the topic both secure in the knowledge that we're both right from a certain point of view.

edit: try "Theresa",you'll probably find a few hits on that.

I'm not saying you're wrong or right. I'm just saying, ADV says it's Teletha, regardless of what gonzo says, the only translations I have of the novel say Teletha as well. Someone from both companies should meet togher and decide...or Someone needs to pick up the original novels...and read it and then tell us which it is :p I don't read japanese, I don't know enough of it to buy an untranlated novel and tell you what it is.

But lets bury it *grabs a shovel*

Translation companies have missed up before. IIRC, in the Hellsing sub, it's Arucard, while the dub has Alucard. I recently saw a preview epiode of Jubei chan 2, and Geneon dubbed a character's name as Freasha. While the Solar fansubs had this as well, it's all but obviously Felicia. If you listen closely to the japanese track, when they calmly say her name, you can hear a quick 'e after the 'f', that gets covered by the 'r' sound through most of the show (hence the confusion). I could be wrong, and it really is Freasha, but Felicia makes more sense to me.

Personally, I'm used to Teletha, but Teresa works too. It suggests that her nickname might be based on her given nameas well, and not her family name, as I don't see where Teletha could become Tessa.
