So I've watched this series now, and it's REALLY good.
But it left me with some questions. I know the questions are VERY general...but I want to clear them up. Last edited by sothis; 02-20-2008 at 09:52 AM. |

wow, this is an old thread :)
i just ordered infinite ryvius after seeing some clips on you tube and seeing that this was the director of planetes and code guisse. both shows i really enjoyed so this seems like a safe bet.

im always looking to improve my writing, all critiques welcome, thanks. also, my indentions aren't showing up, i'm not sure what i did wrong...
Story- 9 This ambitious story is well handled by then first-time director Gorō Taniguchi (of Planetes and Code Geass fame) who succeeds in giving us a smart story in terms of both character depth and plot. Light and dark are also present in the twenty plus characters who take the spotlight and this where the show truly rises above the average. We are sown through the characters the villain in all of us, ever elusive, and rising where we are least guarded. It is this realism that makes Infinite Ryvius unique and genuine, and yet so frustrating to watch. On a number of occasions i found myself resisting the urge to shake my TV and yell at a character "what are you doing?!" By the end i was that emotionally invested in the show and while it can easily be said the show has a slow start (expect five episodes of pure setup) it builds like a quiet giant slowly sneaking up on the half suspecting viewer. I almost want to say the first half was too slow but after finishing the show i had this renewed interest to watch it again. So much had changed in the character hierarchy, and the characters themselves, that the beginning seemed like ancient history, a vague recollection of false hopes. I would also like to comment on the world in which the characters find themselves in. This sci-fi world is reminiscent of the 60s and 70s sci-fi "what if" novels where the basic principle is "invent some new technology or event and show not only how it affects everyone's lives, but how it charges, or doesn't change humanity itself. well this is accomplished with the Gedult phenomenon, a sort of galaxy wide storm emanating from the sun along the planetary axis, effectively halting further space development. This is where the Ryvius comes in, a new breed of ship that can "submerge" in the storm giving the ship a U boat feel. I wish they would have capitalized on this u-boat aspect more which would have complimented the tension on board the ship perfectly. Instead we are treated with pretty standard-fair space battles. + unique situation + great characters + large well rounded cast + strong sci-fi world - First half doesn't stand-up as well on its own Animation- 8 I was very happy with the style of animation and for having such a large cast it was fairly easy to distinguish one character from another. I read somewhere that there where inconsistencies with character proportions, I didn't see this though. The children s proportions where a bit stylized yes, but it was consistent throughout the show and whoever was their lead animator is very good. Subtitling on the other hand was a joke. i was treated to tiny, yellow, indiscernible text who laughed at my futile attempts to decipher them as they flashed on and off the screen at a rate only a speed reader could love (and some may wonder why people buy hong kong copies). Fed up, i finally, and probably foolishly, began pausing every other line, insistent i finish the show the way i began it, with subtitles. The animation as a whole was not the best but considering the huge cast of characters, the time it takes to do each character and what i assume was a lower budget resulted in a slightly sparce/rouph quality to some of the scenes. in the end the true test of animation is "did you believe it?" I did. + strong style + good character design + good tech - poor production values Sound- 5 As you can tell from the score this section is far inferior to the rest of the show. The dub i only listened to for about 3 episodes and had the same lack of talent and subtlety you find in most anime dubs. for a show that is so reliant on its script ( which is superb) everything was as i feared, overacted when not needed. But hey, that's every anime right, so i cant score it low for the norm? well the music was even worse, awful is the first word that comes to mind. luckily its almost non-existent too... Or maybe i blocked it out. What i do recall is this break-beat, record-scratching theme they play every commercial break as if to inform you that the conspicuous lack of music should be appreciated. Which is sad because, for me , animation is far more dependent on music to help convey emotion than a regular live action show. sound isn't all bad though, the sound effects were fitting and i could appreciate the Japanese voice talents. + japanese voices + sound effects were fitting - music is awful - dubb is overacted (the norm) Overall- 8.5 I so wanted to give this a better score because its a bad ass story and the show was close to greatness, surprising though is what seriously held Infinite Ryvius back wasn't a crap story or lack of character depth, only its poor production values in animation and more importantly sound. For myself, i really enjoyed the show and i imagine it appealing to the kind of person who couldn't wait to go to sociology class or just fans of serious sci-fi in general.

Watching this because there aren't too many realistic space shows.
Music is by the guy who did Seikai no monshou, but I don't like the hip hop jingles. His son by the way composed for Nadesico. ep2 |
