I actually liked this anime much more than I thought I would. What made it above average is that it is relentlessly pessimistic. The ending was amazing.[

Just when you think things are shaping up for Miyu, genki girl turns into a demon and all hell breaks loose. It doesn't compromise with a sappy ending or a happy one, it dives headon into grim emotional breakdown and I appreciate it grealy.

@Nocturnalgloria
I agree, it is not a happy happy Joy Joy title. It leaves you a bit uneasy after each episodic story.

LOL, well, I can't fault you there.
We both need to watch a good bloody epic after this. =)

Heh, well I can not call it a diamond in the rough by any means Vivis, in fact it is more like random shiny things in the rough.
Would have loved to have had your insight.

Ep 9 Was more predictable than Jason killing teens in Friday the 13th.
... that was an ugly cat.
I am sorry, I could not have a cat that looked more like a wombat... or get one from a dead neighbor. That was odd.
Anyhow, The fact it was going to ruin their peaceful lives, could have almost been condensed into 15 minutes =P Only interesting point was Miyu looked almost happy about the graves... =O
Ep10
Well, finally one of the girls who are the classmates get actual story time rather than just being there.
I had to laugh at this however

Cheeky boy! =D
Episodes with Rehia are just a tad better in my book. Finally get to see Miyu vs Rehia. well, kinda. And obviously the boy is still protecting the swamp in the end

Usually in the case of an anime like Kyuuketsuki Miyu I can complain about bad the anime follows the story, but even Kakinouchi couldn't make up her mind on the story so that's out the window. That said, the TV series did change up some of the few steady canon things in Kyuuketsuki Miyu.

- Reiha is in NO way supposed to be Miyu's "rival." Reiha ranks way higher than Miyu. She's even higher up than Ranka. Everyone's afraid of Reiha and nobody tries to piss her off.
- Miyu is supposed to be a lot more playful and clingy than the TV series portrays (more like the OVA).

The OVA is a much better portrayal of the Kyuuketsuki Miyu world and characters, though Larva does talk and Miyu wouldn't ever fight Ranka (Miyu really is about as low as you can get on the totem pole). I've always enjoyed Kyuuketsuki Miyu more for the nostalgia of being one of the first shoujo manga I liked and the art and atmosphere more than the story, mainly because there is no consensus from the mangaka about the story so you're pretty much on your own to guess that part.

I do think the TV series could've done better storywise to cut out some of the "monster of the week" stuff and put in Miyu's daughter (now that's a sad story, kinda) or some more of Ranka.

You can see where this series sits on my lists.

hmm, I have been looking at it like an independent series... trying to cast aside the ova (mainly cause the attitudes are so different) but i see what you mean... i'm on ep. 10 now so there are still 16 more eps... i dont think it would rank 27 on my list though, at least not so far... i am not bored with the show though, i can say that... I guess i was just expecting it to be darker!

Kyuuketsuki Miyu is not so much a dark franchise as a "rei" franchise. Meaning zero, or neither bright nor dark, happy or sad. It just is, much like, well, Rei (i.e. Fatal Frame/Project Zero) and its "rei" endings, which are not particularly good or bad endings but just endings. You can kind of see that in Miyu's position as a Watcher and her promise with Larva.

Narumi Kakinouchi isn't the kind of mangaka who can spin a story that has any specific slant. She's more an artist than a writer. Hell, she can't even decide on Miyu's origin.

Personally I always found Miyu's daughter more interesting a character (even if she's a bit too dependent), though they never put Yui in the anime.

That is why I said I liked the OAV better.

But then again I never saw the manga, and originally never finished the TV. Hell, it was almost 6-7 years since I even tried. The OAV I probably saw even farther back.

As for rivalry, I have no clue who is a rival to who, I just said they sorta go at it, and they sure as shit did, briefly.
I had not looked at your list, but is it the OAV or the TV you have listed on there?
Needless to say I have enjoyed it. But I bet I would have enjoyed it more with a Manga background.

*Edit, The next couple eps 11 and 12 have more meat on them.
Ep 11 had an ironic turn for an end. Somewhat sad. Interesting to see Rehia get wrapped in hair. =O
Ep 12 that was actually somewhat unique. They sure like cats in this show ;)

Like Funkgun said I never had a chance to read the manga, but for some reason I get the feeling it woulda been cool if they put Miyu's daughter in the anime... either way I am beginning to like it more... I'm guessing this is supposed to take place in a timeline after the ova... since in the ova she never officially decided to be the guardian... furthermore, even if they aren't rivals... yeah the do go at it a lot... giving each other the evil eye and all... pissing each other off!
oh and thanks for the tip about Rei franchises... never heard of them.. never really cared to look either but you got me interested... so thanks

moving on... ep 11 was truly ironic, and where you found it sad... i found it perfect for the atmosphere... i think i even had a mild laugh somewhere in there at the ending...
ep12 was a little corny, but entertaining all the same...

EDIT: I just finished 13 and 14 and I really enjoyed it. Seeing some solid story between how they got together and Larva's past was nice, though they did repeat things a lot. Still it was good, I am kinda understanding a few of the things that bothered me at first!

The fact that miyu ended up waking larva by calling him was predictable, still interesting to see the story with him and Garline

Sorry a tad late, been busy with choosing kitchen cabinets with girlfriend. =O
I will watch 4 eps or 6 tomorrow.
Ep 13
Yeah this one starts out with a fight for a change. Interesting, we now know that Larva and her have been together forever (which is pretty long ;) But actually I liked seeing some past history.
(why is it the eyes on miyu look different in certain episodes? And I am not just talking color as when she is transformed)
Anyhow
Guardian? Shinma Love story?
So Miyu... not just hanging out here and wiping up on shima at her leasure. no it is a duty and such. =) Without it she would just be a vampire. and one that would be hunted. Very interesting.
Oh and by the way, Western Shinma Lilith can play my flute any day =O

finally a 2 parter
14
Somewhat vampirishly romantic
So she bit hit, and the blood intertwined. But even more-so.
Yeah I agree with garline. he was a bit obsessed with Larva was he not? At least it ended on a good note, calling him a friend.
