Most of the recs don't really seem to fall in line for me - some were good, but none had quite what I was looking for as a follow up to this gem. Has anyone found a title that has a similar blend of dysfunctional relationship and soul-searching despair?

Of the ones I recall the closest fit would probably be Steins;Gate. Myself; Yourself was decent but far too... buoyant. As a side note both have semicolons in their titles. I doubt that is part of the allure, though.

^ There is nothing like it in anime form but there are some in manga, such as Ressentiment and Believers.

So is he a Hikomori because he has mental problems, or does he have mental problems because he is a Hikomori? A lot of anime characters turn Hikomori due to stress but his seemed kind of spontaneous.

It could be a vicious cycle at this point; the mental problems/voices in his head convincing him he shouldn't go out, but the voices may be there or be stronger because he has been isolated so long in the first place.

As in, he was just walking down the street when, with no prelude, he lost it. We don't even know if all the stuff he was hearing was real or in his head.

^ Hm. Valid point. So it seems like the voices in his head, whatever their cause, was what caused him to become hikikomori... but that means there's a remaining question as to what caused the voices.

I love it. I don't know why I just do. It's damn good. Can't explain why it is so good but I guess you just have to watch it to appreciate it I guess.

I'm sure a lot of people like and love it but also guessing there is a lot of people who hate it with a passion :3

Also the soundtrack was so damn awesome.
