The time skip was unnecessary, although getting out of the shit hole of anime that preceded the awesome Ushio arc was definitely a plus.
Yeah, I don't mean to say he was not "emotionally broken and distraught", and I know they could have make some interesting-alternative plot. I'm refearing to the fact that his life was pointless (I really mean it) before Nagisa came toi his life, he did not had a goal, an idol, he hadn't have a single reason for living (just to live). When he finally founds something to live for, this reason is taken away. He is, in fact, so "emotionally broken and distraught" that he tries to erase from his life anything that made him recall of Nagisa. Those 5 years are marked by the fact that Tomoya did not want to remember... did not want to find a true reason for living, so as not to lose it again.

In my opinion, those years MUST been skipped becase: 1) The tension adquired with the loss of Nagisa may have disapeared if not skipped. 2) The story would become too focus on Tomoya, being heavy for part of the audience and 3) as it was a provisional reality, it was not intended to be so in-depth

What's the problem people have with Nagisa :S. I read the other stories and they are so cliche and uninteresting.

I think the story was great.. and the main story was all that really stands out for it even if I enjoyed the whole thing. If I recommended the anime, I'd say that watch it for the main story. The story touches a lot of situations that are more common than most people think, like losing a wife, leaving a child because of mental stress, etc. It's really touching when you put it in a real life context. Maybe It's just me because I've seen people go through this kind of thing, and you feel bad for everyone in the situation. And seriously.. if the part where ushio says that she wants that robot because it was her dads first present, didn't make you sad.. then you have no heart... tinman/woman.

I consider it one of the best emotional anime I've seen. What I mean by emotional, is that it's an anime that has actually affected my emotion and was intended to do so. It's the only anime that has gotten me even remotely close to tears. Meaning, i'm not very tear-prone.

All in all I loved the story, and even though story-wise, him staying with ushio alone was a much better ending. The magical ending explains the damn orbs... and it leaves a much nicer taste in my palette. I am glad this was the case, as I don't like bittersweet endings as much as happy ones. But that's just me.

Oh, and without Nagisa there would be no Ushio... have you no heart?

she just erks some people. Then they don't relate or emotionally connect, causing them to have an annoyingly bitter time.

I agree, this show is my second favorite for a reason. Although I also get why some people loathe it.

I liked Nagisa and the parents that came with her, but she wasn't the most "interesting" of all the girls in the original Clannad. I won't argue with people when they say Tomoyo or even Kyou would've been the better choice (although the latter probably would've made for a cliche tsundere story and received hate afterwards just as much as Nagisa).

yeah, i agree. Clannad's focuses on friends more than family (although the event of Akkio and Sanae's past), and AS on family.

I love Nagisa, but, she´s not in my top.

1. Akki (the best, he's funny, serious, and gives advices that I find useful)
2. Tomoya (hate to put the protagonsit here, but felt identified)
3. Sanae (AS favored her, dating Sunohara and taking care of Ushio)
4. Ushio (pretty popular, but she rocks)
5. Kyou (she's my kind of girl...)

Best quote from AS: "Sanae said that the only places I could cry were in the bathroom…and in daddy’s arms"

wow... i avoided this thread because i was pissed off at the waste of my life that AS was, and didn't feel like ranting, but then i read the last few pages and see Pidjiken had almost exactly the same issue i did with it (I never saw the VN, frankly, the VN's storyline doesn't enter into the equation for me).

I'm going to spoil everything that follows though it's mostly borderline as to if it even IS a spoiler... I'm sure it's close enough to the line to need it.

In short my problem was... 19 eps of crap. and 4 of good (who could hate the Ushio arc?) plus a recap ep... throw in the worst cop-out/reset button ending ever... i mean why the hell did we watch the 24 eps of crap if you're just going to give us "its just a dream" ending (yeah... i know that's not what the ending actually was... but it was the "equivalent" of one). In short it's like saying "psych!" you watched for 24 eps and nothing you watched really happened!

It's like they went for a St. Elsewhere ending only it wasn't ironic, or amusing, it was just trolling.

As for Nagisa... she was just there. There was never anything to like or appreciate about her... and her "weak body/ill health" hook was just so anime cliche I'm sure it's listed in TV Tropes (what is with Japanese fascination with tragically ill women suffering silently with some undisclosed "mystery" illness that is never really explained, and has no cure? Is this attractive to anyone?) The twins or Tomoyo were far more amusing "love interests" in this anime then bland sickly Nagisa.

We aren't alone. There are a lot of people that have the exact same issues and a great deal have posted about it. This threads been a war zone since day 1, we've repeatedly had to club the squealing morons back into their disheveled dens.

AS is nothing special, it just caters to pussies, although the Ushio arc is very very good, the rest is just a waste of time and completely horrid.

Good reading material

I went extra harsh for you Quizzie. <3

I would like to note that I, Lemur, officially endorse both the original clannad and after story as two of the best made and deepest anime ever.

That is all.

Haha, your avatar suits your role playing there, except from bunker to bunker and you're using an axe in the ground as leverage from being blown away from the repercussions of the bombs
