The terrifying character designs effectively killed my anticipation for this series from all the famous mecha designers in it, as well as my desire itself, to watch this series. I can put up with some bad stuff, but this was just horrid. Especially the eyes. Actually, it wasn't until I saw how good the character designs in the ED were that I became disgusted with the episode's character designs. It's not that the character designs they have suck, it's that they have good ones but don't use them. >.>

I actually really like the character designs for the show. I think it makes the show actually look a little different then all the other fifty billion mech shows out there. The designs in the ending look really generic and boring to me. I haven't really looked it up, so I don't know for sure, but I think Gigantic Formula must have the same character designer or studio or something as Kamichu. They look really similar.
And as for the actual animation, it's very good. Everything is very fluid and looks really nice. They must have spent a lot of money on this show. The story is fairly interesting so far too. I'm hoping they get past the robot duels fairly quickly and into some deeper plot. There's a lot in the background information that the narration gives that has yet to be brought into the main part of the story that I think will be very interesting. |

I'm tempted to say some of you are trying to get too much out of a mech-series. However, I actually like it. Maybe I'm more tolerant, but I don't think the character designs or the animation styles are bad. I think they are quite clean. I wonder what you think of series like Capeta and Yamato Nadeshiko .... If anything, I'm pleased with the story at episode three. It isn't totally the same as every other mech series ever and that is about all I ever hope for when I watch such a series. There are too many of such series made for truly great options to appear often.

I don't personally find anything too distracting about the animation. I've only watched one episode and already I'm used to it. The red cheeks are odd, but I think quirky animation is nice once in a while. Just to give a bit of texture to this glossy Gundam Seed-style animation that's floating around a lot (Heroic Age, Toward Terra, Code Geass).
The story in the first episode is pretty much exactly what you'd expect. That formula I swear has been used since time immemorial. Lol. But I suppose what counts is what happens after this intro. To tell the truth, I'm frickin awe-inspired by the mecha design. Right now, that's what's keeping me watching. The animation is CG, isn't it? But it fits in so well, and the way they move is luuuurvely. Sort of chunky arms, but I like their slim waists and the way the Chinese one had a smiling face, and the green glowing bits on that mech's feet when it flew. The dim shades of the colours also gives it a more serious tone. I'd say the one nagging issues is that the anime is about kids in mechs. I swear, I don't know why - I mean, I KNOW that's what mecha serieses tend to be like, I KNOW this one is probably targeted at kids so they want to see heroes their own age, I KNOW they'll make some kind of rule that makes it plausible, but I just kinda sagged a bit and thought 'Damnit, what happened to adults saving the world once in a while?' Maybe I'm getting old. It's a small issue. Overall, there's lots of potential from here. |
