Ep 2: Wow... that was generic as hell. Again, gorgeous mecha animation in my opinion but I don't think ANY plot device or idea was original. Mystery quiet girl who translates the mecha's will, mecha's 'wounds' translate to pilot, randomly talented 14-year old boy pilot who doesn't want to fight, conformity factor, kids who are somehow military officers, even the married couple sharing a mecha has been done before... Seriously, what did they put in here to actually HOOK us?

Ep 3 better start the plot rolling properly.

Episode 5/6. Wow. This anime is even more mundane than I thought. It literally just steals ideas from every other mecha out there (I list them in my head as I go along) and then combines them to form the most supreme-mecha-formula of all time. I can't bring myself to care about Mana's problems because I've seen it done before in Eureka Seven. I don't care about Suwa because he's bland (attempts to make him cheery are completely destroyed by the atmospheric and grey-shade animation). And I certainly am not buying the idea of a child genius in that pig-tailed girl. So after all that, imagine my utter horror when
they toss in the government Ninjas.
Jesus Christ.

I was considering (once it's added to AniRec) making a rec for Neon Genesis. But all I could think was 'Someone who likes Neon Genesis won't appreciate having the same yet somehow inferior opening plot fed to them AGAIN, so not NGE-GF. Someone who actually LIKES the ever-generic Gigantic Formula might be put off by the older animation of Neon Genesis and its strong philosophical complexity. So not GF-NGE'.

Anyone else see my dilemma?

I'm kind of gradually losing interest in this series too. Especially after
the appearance of ninjas.
It makes me wonder if I'll be able to stay motivated enough to translate the entire series. I'm kind of bored with it already.

I'll watch to episode 10. If it hasn't picked up properly by then, this show is not worth my time. I usually only give a series like 3 eps to wield its magic, but I want to find out more about the idols before I quit. And want to see a couple of the other mecha too. Shame. The mecha fights are gorgeous to look at.

I don't think this show would be raked over so bad if it's wasn't so soon off the heels of Eureka 7. Some of it even reminds me of Gad Guard (and so on).

I'll stick with this awhile unless it gets really silly. Oh, and while it does remind me of Eureka 7 at least it doesn't have Renton (puke!).

I'd disagree. One thing that made Eureka 7 so different was its 'normal and happy' personality in Renton. Unlike other mecha, they treated him a lot like a child. He was well-executed and beautifully drawn, I might add. His smiles actually made me smile, his pep-talks actually made me feel sunshine, when he cried, I wanted to cry. But Suwa is shit. He's as bland and shit as presumably 'happy' characters get.

*sigh* Where's Shinji Ikari when you need him?

I just watched the first episode, and everything about it was laughable. The character designs are horrid, as has been mentioned before. The eyes, the red dots, etc. I'm not sure how anybody could call this fluid animation. It's not fluid if it jerks around in ways that are physically impossible for the human body. And the long panning shots to disguise the fact that no new frames are being drawn... This show clearly blew all its money on the CG, and got third-stringers for the hand drawn parts. And then there's the plot and the dialogue. Yeesh. The best I can say about this show is that it gave me 20 minutes of unintentional hilarity before I shift-deleted it. Sorry sothis, but my only recommendation for people who like this show is a lobotomy. ;)
