The wolf was actually sent by the old witch woman. It's been a while and I forget her name heh. She sent it hoping that the horse was sturdy enough to survive the fall.

She pulled some sort of a mud-doll magic to make it look like they had been tossed into the valley along with the horse. It's the same stunt she pulled when the squad of assassins was sent to kill her.

They don't retrieve the bodies because that valley is notorious for having a poisonous miasma which permeates the area and is completely deadly. So between the fall and the poison, there was no way they could have survived, and they themselves would have died in the process of trying to investigate.

Balsa needed to go back to that city for a number of reasons, not the least of which was she needed the blacksmith to fix her spear still. I forget the other reasons.

I believe the reason she felt no risk is that, as she goes to lengths to point out: the story surrounding her had become something of a folktale. And as with any folktale, everyone had their own version, and no one would believe anyone who said they were actually the main character of that tale- least of all some common woman.

Just re-watched the show after first seeing it about a year ago, it may have been even better the second time around =)

I recently grabbed the entire box set from the current RightStuf sale that was going on for $18 which is a steal for a 26 episode show of this caliber. The sale lasts for 4 more days I believe so if anyone really likes this show I would recommend grabbing it now.

The show has some minor flaws, but overall I feel it was very enjoyable. And seeing a strong female main character that kicks arse and isnt a psychopath is a nice change of pace.
