I would HIGHLY recommend Boogiepop Phantom (when Masakari gets to this thread, I think he would too). It is definitely one of the great horror anime.... the best thing about it is how the various layers of the show unravel as you see more of it. It only gets better the more you see of it.

Yeah. Boogiepop Phantom is definitely not for everyone, but if you saw one episode and liked it, I imagine you'd like the rest of the show even more. It's very dark, has great stories, and it really is amazing how many layers the story has... you can very much enjoy it as just a type of 'twilight zone'-esque show with various loosely connected stories about different kids, but I've watched this show three times in its entirety and every time I've found a host of new connections, links between the stories and characters and details that I never noticed before. It's one of my all-time favorites without a doubt.

Yeah.... that really is one of the most satisfying things about watching this show..... watching one episode, then watching a few more and then seeing things like the same scene from a different character's point of view, adding new insight both to what you are watching and what you saw before. It's one of the best uses of this storytelling style I think I've ever seen.

Yeah, a number of people do seem to connect it to Lain (I think a lot of it because of the directorial style and the visual style.... although the staff was unrelated). Boogiepop Phantom did also air in the timeslot that Lain had occupied. Otherwise though, Boogiepop is definitely much more of a horror type of show.

I previewed the first episode of this last night to see if it was worth buying the boxed set. The animation and style was pretty similiar to Texhnolyze - a bit lower budget. Anyway - I definately liked what I saw - is the whole series this dark? If so - I'm buying!
Any advise would be welcome. |

Yeah the whole thing is that dark... but it gets rather confusing, and is rather thought provoking. Sorta like Serial Experiments Lain. There is also a live action prequal to the series called Boogiepop and Friends that is probably going to be very difficult to find, but it is worth the effort. I thought it was pretty good.
