I've been wanting to add a help section to AP, and am thinking we'll go with a pre-built option for it. I know there's the option of adding a site wiki, but I'm not convinced that's the best way to go.
Given we have a lot of tech folks on the site, I figured I'd ask the community: have you used a good knowledgebase program that you like? I'm open to paid software as well if it's especially awesome - for example I may do a system like that sometime such as zendesk for customer service type questions (ie, bug reports, feature requests, etc). For the help section, a wiki-type program might be better.

What would this knowledgebase be for? Like about the site or like anime terminology and things like that?

Would be for how the site works and how to do things, basically. for example, how to set up an anime list, how to add loved/hated chars, etc ^_^

The first few knowledge bases that come to mind all use MediaWiki, so that seems to be a popular choice, though I couldn't tell you how it compares to other choices. I'm also not convinced that a wiki is the best way to go. Maybe it would be better to just have a team of ~5 people writing tutorials.
For the customer service, maybe IRC would be the best option (in a separate channel so the main channel doesn't get flooded). You could embed the channel on the site so that people don't need a client. |

its definitely an option to have a select group writing tutorials, the problem is they need to live somewhere with a TOC, search options, etc. All of which add up cost-wise, so we're hoping to use more of a plug and play situation (even if it's only a team of mods who have access to write the content)

Considering how many people responded to the 'site tutorials' announcement awhile back, I think a wiki might be the best way to go. Wikimarkup is very versatile and easy to learn, and Mediawiki is a wonderfully easy program to use. I know I'd be willing to write up a very large chunk and I suspect more then a few others would too, resulting in very detailed and specific guides.
(I'll try to find the thread I'm referring to, one second) Edit: This one: Help needed: tutorial creators |

I'm a big fan of how you keep the site integrated with the forum and in general most parts so you always feel connected to AP. If it's just general things about using the website/forum, I think a page with brief tutorials/screen shots would suffice.
If it's going to be grander, something like this might suffice: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_Text_Editor E is a windows based text editor modeled from textmate, and that's its wiki. Those are just my suggestions on the matter, as long as the information is presented in a clear and succinct format, it should be do its job.
