Default Recent downtime

Just wanted to say we're aware of the occasional downtime that's been happening, and are taking steps to fix it. V3 traffic is definitely challenging the limits of the server and as such, we're working on the growing pains to help things run smoother. It's looking like at minimum, we'll need to get another hard drive into the server (thus upping the hosting cost).

I didn't notice any downtime at all. But that's probably because I'm watching anime pretty much all day. :P

*is wondering if anyone in charge is even aware that the site is currently down*

The "we're upgrading" message currently up is the same default one that's always up whenever the site is down. While being better than no message at all, it fall far short of being useful. When it's always the same message, one never knows if the server is actually being upgraded, if something else is being done, or if the msg just popped up automatically & no one is even aware that the site is down.

I don't really mind the downtime itself, I just want to know that someone is aware & doing something.

uh, it says the server is being upgraded for speed. it's a new msg.

yes, obviously we're doing something, or the msg wouldnt be up. it doesnt just pop up - it has to be physically turned on.

if the site was down unintentionally you would see a 'not found' default browser page, not anything branded by AP

Seems like it's the same message every time it's up. I know I've seen a generic message up before, unrelated to what was actually going on at the time (a message saying the server was being worked on when in fact v3 was being installed, or a message saying v3 was being installed when it was actually a server being worked on, something like that. I don't recall exactly).

In any case, I just wanted to make sure it hadn't simply crashed/rebooted/whatever while no one was looking.

Drahken, thanks for the concern. To counteract the huge influx of traffic that V3 is bringing, we did perform a few upgrades to the server, and depending on how much more the site grows, there are other upgrades planned for the near future. This one was to add another hard disk for the database server.

...and after a few issues with our server hard disk setups, AP should be back at full strength with no more downtime. As much as I love hardware issues, I'm happy to announce that they have come to pass.

How many hits per day does anime-planet bring in, just curious?

I would think the server runs silky smooth anyway on a dedicated server. I'm sure it costs enough as it is, so it would suck if you had to upgrade it this soon (if it is costing more). Of course this site is befitting of such traffic, but it always comes with a cost.
