The bigger problem is that Mecha isn't always Sci-Fi (think Escaflowne, Wild Knights Gulkeeva, and Maze, though the former two don't have the Mecha tag for some reason).

for now i'd like to keep sub tags as ones that share the same parent topic name (ie, contemporary fantasy -> fantasy), until i can more thoroughly consider other options.

Monster -> Ghost Hunter (which could be renamed to Monster Hunter imo to encompass a larger selection of series)
Also, all the individual sports are obviously subtags of 'Sports' If you added a 'School' tag the following could be subtags: 'High School', 'University', 'Teacher-student relationship', 'Haunted School' Historical -> World War 2 |
