If you're going to go with a sub tag system, I think you should group all tags. For example; have a comedy major tag with each subset of comedy as a sub tag, a fantasy major tag with each subtype of fantasy as a sub tag, etc. It would be much more organized & less confusing that way. An example of this confusion is the contemporary fantasy sub tag you mentioned, wouldn't that really just be the same as (or at least extremely similar to) the urban fantasy main tag we already have?

you didnt misunderstand. if space opera is a sub tag, the anime would ONLY be tagged with space opera, and not sci fi. i consider sci fi as important enough to not change it for something like space opera - but also because i think for the most part, tags should retain the original tag in some way (ie fantasy -> contemporary fantasy)
drahken: well yes, that's the point :p the current tags aren't structured yet because the feature isnt launched. it exists, but not launched till i figure out the original question ^)^

romantic comedy would be the only tag in the anime or manga. when you load up the romance or comedy (those are the parent tags) tag pages, though, you'd see the romantic comedy anime listed in there.
so the key is, a sub tag REPLACES the parent tags in the anime/manga entries, instead of how it's done now, where romance, comedy, and romantic comedy would all show up in the anime/manga entry.

Ah, so the problem with making Space Opera a sub-tag of Sci-Fi is only that you then can no longer literally read that that is (also) a science fiction. That problem could be solved by renaming "Space Opera" as "Space Opera (SF)" or so.
Also, you might be worrying too much: those who know what Space Opera means (should) know that it is science fiction and those that do not know what it means shall learn it when they try to find out what it means. |

Dark comedy:
Kemonozume Dai Mahou Touge Welcome to the NHK! Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei There are probably others. Definitely a sub-tag I'd strongly support. Also: Sci-Fi -> Cyberpunk Okay, this has basically the same problem as the already enumerated 'space opera' concern, but it is also a subgenre of sci-fi. Whatever solution is applied to the former should it be implemented could also be used here. |

I think Science Fantasy which combines aspects of fantasy and science fiction could also be a good sub-tag.
I see Mai Hime as a good example, and since Kiddy Grade isn't only tagged sci-fi but fantasy as well, that should be Science Fantasy as well, as goes for the Mai-Otome meta-series. Last edited by Betelgeuse; 01-04-2009 at 12:34 PM. |

while it could make logical sense, ive never heard the term 'science fantasy' used before. we want to use recognizable terms.

Drama > Slow drama (Kino's Journey)
Drama > Tragic/Sad drama (e.g. Grave of the Fireflies, Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora) Drama > War/Military drama (e.g. Grave of the Fireflies, maybe Pumpkin Scissors) Drama > Romantic drama (e.g. Nana, Paradise Kiss, Ai Shite Night, Rec, Tokyo Marble Chocolate) Drama > High-school drama Drama > Musical drama (e.g. Nodame Cantabile, Beck, Piano no Mori, La Corda D'Oro) Drama > Sports drama (e.g. Major, Ganbare! Kickers, Hikari no Densetsu, Attack No 1) Romance > Romantic tragedy (e.g. Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien) Romance > High-school romance Romance > Historical romance (e.g. Victorian Romance Emma, Lady Georgie, Rose of Versailles) Comedy > Spastic comedy (e.g. Detroit Metal City) Sci-Fi > Dystopic sci-fi (e.g. Akira, Kaiba, Metropolis) Sci-Fi > Mecha (same problem as Space Opera, but frankly, there are sub-genres that just don't have the parent name in the title - might just have to accept that?) Sci-Fi > Environmental Sci-fi (e.g. Origin: Spirits of the Past) Fantasy > Environmental Fantasy (e.g. Princess Mononoke, Laputa) Thriller > Psychological thriller (e.g. Perfect Blue, Death Note, Kaiji) Action > Samurai/Ninja action (e.g. Ninja Scroll, Samurai Champloo, Stranger Mukou Hadan) Shoujo > Mahou Shoujo (e.g. Card Captor Sakura)
